rebuilding a 1957 RDE 19 and need to know easiest way to remove the plug that is holding the water scoop screen in place. I need to replace the screen and there doesn't seem to be a simple way to remove this plug.

Re: 1957 RDE 19 water scoop plug

I'll try to get some pics posted, but, on the lower unit is an angled water scoop that picks up water for the water pump. In the scoop is a screen and holding the screen in the scoop is an aluminum plug about 3/8 inch long. I thought that I could take a pin punch and knock it out, but it is difficult to get the right angle on the punch to give it a good whack, so I am going to hold off till I get some input from this forum. I am hoping there might be an easy way to knock the plug out. I have the replacement screen and plug ready to reinstall. Once this is done, the rebuild of the lower unit will be complete. Had to replace one bearing and all of the seals, along with the lower unit oil fill plugs and the water pump impeller. This last detail, along with a good sand blast and repaint and she should be good to go.
