I have a 1957 12 hp Sea king. My buddies and I got it running a couple of years ago with very little work after not being ran for 25+ years. We cleaned out the carb replaced the gas line and it ran well till about a month ago. I was out fishing and it died on me and only kicked over for about 10 seconds at a time. We have taken the engine apart just to check everything. Surprisingly the impeller looks great. The only problem is the bottom spark plug does not have a spark. I changed out the spark plugs. What part do I need for the magneto? I assuming that is what its called. Where do I find the right parts and Is there a place to get a manual? I can get the model # and it post it I just forgot to write it down and it is at a buddys. I could post a pic to.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Howdy, eflask7.

Welcome to iboats. :)

If you can post the model number all of your questions will be answered.

Good luck. :)

Re: 1957 sea king

Unless they have already been changed, that 1957 motor has bad (cracked) coils. The breaker points could also be the problem. You have to take a look.

All magneto parts are available right here at iboats. Just use Johnson or Evinrude in your search instead of Sea King. The magneto parts are exactly the same.

Re: 1957 sea king

I am in the process of rebuilding a 1956 5 hp sea king, the problem i am running into is this. I cannot find the locking plates ..(omc part # 41A17) . I have tried several sites and they all say no results for the part number.
I am wondering if there is a newer version of this that is being used or is there a newer part # or can you get away with some locktite and possibly a lock washer on the bolt????
Just wandering if someone could help.

Thanks Pete

Those guys just haven't been around as long as I have. That lockplate part number has been changed to 307558.

BTW, welcome to the iboats forum. But please, in the future start a new thread when starting a new subject. Tacking onto another unrelated one is called hi-jacking and is frowned upon. Don't be offended, we all had to learn.

And whatever you do, don't revive old threads. The moderators just hate that and they hang you upside down and flog you with a soggy carrot. :D

Re: 1957 sea king

I will post a photo of my engine with the cover off and plate covering the coils
Off. I need to get new coils, the epoxy is cracked on them. Any idea where to order them? The breaker points look brand new, so they are fine.

Model number: GG8917B
Serial number: 75X698404

12 hp, 2 cylinder, has two coil packs.

I can post a new thread if that is preferred.

Thanks for all the help!!

Oh no, you're fine, F_R and I were refering to peterz65. You're the original poster, so it's all good. :)

12hp Sea King, huh? Cool old engines. Yea, if you need new coils, they are still readily available anywhere OMC parts are sold. Just take one with you, incase you get a counter guy who doesn't know Sea Kings as well as Johny/Rudes. Those coils were used on all OMC twins and singles from 1951, till about 1976, so you shouldn't have an issue with "oh we need to order that"
Same thing with the points, condensors and spark plug leads. Spark plug lead is sold by the foot, so get 6 feet of it.

If your motor is a full shift model, which I think it is, then the water pump impeller will be the same that is used on 10hp (1949 - 57) 14hp (1950 - 51) 15hp (1953 - 56) 18hp (1957 - 73) 20hp (1966 - 76) and 25hp (1969 - 76)

If you have any other questions after the tune up, let us know. Welcome to iBoats.

Here is a pic of my sea king with the top popped off. The coils are shot and I will have to find some new ones. Thanks for all the help.

Re: 1957 sea king

After looking through the part numbers for ignition coils, I am assuming you meant part number 18-5181 for the sierra part number.

Thanks for the help again, I just ordered two of them.

Re: 1957 sea king

I have replaced the coils and I am still not getting a spark in one of the spark plugs. New spark plugs and coils, what are some other things I should look at? Points and condensers look really good, maybe replace the spark plug leads? Any ideas?
