Re: 1957 seahorse 35hp Johnson

You've got a workhorse in the rough there. The fuel pump conversion is easy to do, whichever option you choose. Might try a pressurized tank though, some folks get along with them real well. You can run it with the lower unit in a big trash can or barrel of water, but be forewarned the water will be an oily mess when you finish...just a heads up in case you've got fussy neighbors or the green police nearby. After you get it running well, consider repainting the top cowl...those motors really clean up nicely. Below is a pix of the Texas Maid, the 57 Evinrude is a cousin to your Johnson.

That looks like a E35 and a J18? Are they? You cant run it that way, do you?

Samo means the twin setup on Tmcalavy's Texas Maid. Sure looks like a 1957 35hp and a 1958 18 hp to me. I'd like to know how they run too.

Yup that's a 57 Big Twin 35 hp and a 57 Johnson 18 hp. Why can't I run them that way? Dual power, not hp matched of course, and the motors are separated on the transom by about 15 inches. Haven't had it on the lake this way yet, that comes later this week. I'll let you know how it goes...expect some torque steer from the larger 35, but that's about it.

Can seem to get myself to sign a model release for the vid, if I wind up circling your boat I'll wave.

I also have a 57 J35, a 56 J30 and just recently add a 56 E30, but none are tiller. All are projects, in fact when I bought the J35, the guy I got it from had bolted on a lawn mower handle on as his tiller! I wish I had a photo but he took it off when I told him I did not want it!

Where was I going with this? Oh yeah, I don't see (m)any tillers at all on the old big ones. And quite frankly they're so noisy, I wouldn't wanna be beside em anyway! Remotes all the way for me :)
i have a 56 Javelin 30 tiller :) and wish i didnt...

Why do you wish you did'nt?
I want something newer and with controls...

she runs GREAT and pushes my 14ft pretty good at 25mph.... but i just dont want to have to "work" that hard to fish....

i wish someone would buy it that appreciates it for what it is... :)

I have many QD's, no '56ers though. Most are good. Does it run? Good compression? Got photos yet? But for any questions and photos, please start a new thread.

Rob,
I got mine at nymarine.com. You don't want to know what they cost but they are worth it (to me!). You'll spend a bunch of money trying to match it and spend about the same.
JBJ

Yep....... What did they cost?....... :) ....... Here's the link to speed up your search for paint and decals Roofus........

I've never seen a pressure tank with the high sides like that before. Maybe it was custom for some reason?

Re: 1957 seahorse 35hp Johnson

Hmmmmm,
After looking further at all the pics, I don't like how the tie-down straps are rubbing on the bottom edge of the transom. And I want a chrome steering wheel, too. I also wonder how fast it goes and how you keep from scuffing that nice wood with your feet....What does one wear while driving it....silk slippers??? Way too nice for me, I'd constantly worry about scratching it.
Sure is nice,

I was just admiring the cowling seal........ seems like I recall a recent post about making one of these with a piece of hose. Anyone else remember that? Can't remember who suggested it........maybe ezeeke? Nice pics!!! Anyone ever fabricate a tell tale on these outboards? Curious where to locate the fitting for the hose if possible?

Re: Peterborough

Re: Peterborough

The story on the Peterborough is the owner's family bought it in Ontario about 16 years ago when he was 12. He has spent many years doing the restoration. Something like 15 coats on top, 12 coats on the side, 8 coats on the interior. The high side pressure tank is/was mine. Got it in on trade for some work. It said U.S.M.C on the side. My friend (retired OMC mechanic of 30 some years) speculated that they were special made for the military so that they could be stacked. I sold the tank last week for $120.
