I have a 1958 10HP Johnson Seahorse. Just recently the pull start chord stopped working. Whenever I pull on the chord, the chord comes out and retracts as it should, but something is not engaging and there is no resistence in the chord. It looks like the plastic "arm" that turns out and makes contact with the flywheel never moves. If I remember correctly, this should move and engage to move the flywheel. Is there a way to fix this? Any help is appeciated. Thanks

Friction of the wire spring dragging in the groove is what makes the pawl swing out. You will have to figure out why there is no friction going on.

Did somebody grease it ? The spring in the gruve should be dry.

I am fairly new to this, but I ran into this same problem last week after replacing rope, handle and spring - I didn't torque the center bolt enough so the pawl would never moved. The pawl itself was not worn so as soon as I tightend the bolt I could see the pawl start moving again. You should see the pawl move correctly off the engine. I also made sure I cleaned the groove again after messing with everything else.
