Hello all, I am new to the tiller engine world and could use a little help. I acquired a 10016 12290. The previous owner has messed the carburetor up very badly. Both the high and low speed shafts are stripped as well as there ports in the carb.I haven't came across any 10hp carbs for sale, but have seen several 15hp that look identical for cheap.

And lastly, I plan to purchase a complete gasket set, ignition setup and of course the new carb with a kit in it. While I have all this apart is there anything that I can do to increase performance? Maybe parts that interchange or what have you. Thanks in advance.

check laingsoutboards.com, a free want ad on aomci.org, ebay, tcoutboards for a 10hp carb. One for a '57 will fit, and possibly other years. There's nothing you can do to increase performance as far as I know. Using the 15hp carb would probably just get you bad gas mileage, and probably wouldn't idle smooth.

Is it possible to buy a complete new carb? Or maybe a complete ready to bolt on reman carb? I have tried searching but have come up short.

Look for a used carb. Anything new or NOS would be too expensive.

Before spending a bunch of money on it, check compression and make sure that is ok. If you don't have good compression, all the other parts will do no good.

Are you sure the needles a stripped, or do they just need to be re packed? without good packing they may just spin.

Yes the needle and the insert that the needle tightens up in are both in poor shape.

The engine did start and run when i went and looked at it before the purchase. Should have mentioned it earlier but it made about 95-100 psi on both cylinders with a little temperature in the engine.

Thanks for all the help, I am going to buy a used carb and put a kit in it.

That is absolutely fabulous compression, to me. Don't fret about the carb. They don't wear out, and only go bad if somone that doesn't know what they're doing messes it up. Call the guy at laings and get yourself one, or place an ad on aomci.org, and you'll be in business. What's the word on the lower unit? If any water, you may be in a bind. I'd check the lower unit before I spent any money, but I feel confident you would be taken care of for a more than fair price by the aomci members. I ALWAYS have. I'd be embarassed to tell you what I got an electric start set-up for my '57 18hp johnson. Those are good folks.

Re: 1958 10hp questions

Havent tore into the lower unit yet, I'm working my way down the OB lol. Even with the carb all messed up the little engine sounded quite strong when revved.

Going to start ordering parts for it in the next few days. It does have a few other issues such as the steering shaft worn out very badly, from hauling boat with engine just riding along on the back (so I was told). And the shear pin twisted in 2 pieces that were lodged in the prop enough to make it spin.

Has a 8x 8 1/4 prop right now, Hoping it will push my 1960 aluma-craft 14 footer ok.
