I just purchased a 1958 RDE 19C 35 HP Johnson. THe only problem is that the wiring harness was not on the engine. How or do I ? or do I even need this wiring to start the engine with the rope start. I am thinking that the wiring needs to be on in order for the circuit to open and let the engine start and also to stop it right? Along with lighting, and guages right? I really just want to fire this thing up to see how it runs. Looks like it was running not long ago so maybe it will be OK??? All help or advice is greatly appreciated with this new adventure I am on. Thanks to all in advance who reply. OK update, tried hooking the fuel line to engine and barring a couple of leaks, fuel did reach the bowl. Removed front cover to ensure there were no mouse nests in the carb, and tried unsuccessfully to pull start the engine. Not sure if it is a fuel or spark problem but would like to hook up the starter and use that vs. pulling my arm out of it socket!! Controls feel kind of stiff but that can be fixed easily enough just want to hear this thing run!!!

That engine will start and run just fine without a harness. However, if it's been sitting for a long time, you'll wear your arm out pulling the beast.

You can jump the starter, but don't use the starter terminal or the battery post to make the last connection. Too much arcing, and it'll damage either one. I've used two sets of jumper cables and made the final connection at the cables. The starter is 12v. Make the negative connection to the starter bracket or elsewhere on the engine.

I assume you'll be putting a new impeller in that thing, but you should still immerse the lower unit in water in a barrel, well above the water pump in the lower unit.

Try the first start by spraying the standard 24:1 fuel:eek:il mix into the carb throat with a spray bottle. That will bypass the carb, which is likely to need an overhaul and a carb kit.

Several of us here have had Big Twins, so there's ample help for you with that engine. Just ask and we'll help you get the old girl running sweetly.

You should also check the coils. They are always bad on those motors unless they've been chagned already.

i have that exact same motor for parts let me know if you need some and what you need and ill help ya out, also i would put a little two stroke oil into the cylenders and let it soak for a day or two. the reason mine is for parts is becouse it ran for about 10 seconds before it broke a piston ring.
