I am rebuilding the electric starter for my 1958 Johnson 35hp Super Seahorse, and I've had no luck finding good part numbers. Except for the top sleeve bearing (bushing), the inside of the starter looks pretty good. In fact, if I have to, I can reuse everything but that one bearing, but I'd prefer to do a complete rebuild while I have it apart. The only numbers on the starter are MDO 4002M 12v. It is an Auto-lite.

I've apparently lost a great manual I used about ten years ago to get this motor going, and all I have now is a CD version of old Johnson manuals that I bought on Ebay, which hasn't been as much help as I had hoped it would be. According to the identifcation page (pictures) on that CD, the motor is an RD-19C.

Thanks in advance
Tom

I tried one and the number MDO4002M wasn't in their book. I emailed a company online that does nothing but starter and generator rebuild kits, and the number was no good. I've looked for two days online for the number, or anything listing the make and model of the outboard, and all I've come up with is a replacement starter that is a different size, but would work I if I wanted to spend a little more than half of what the motor is probably worth. I really think if I had the Johnson/Evinrude part number for the starter, that this wouldn't be quite so difficult.
Thanks for the response though,
Tom

Starter motor part# for 1958 big twin electric is 376850 starter motor assembly. This is an OMC original #.

Thanks DHP,
I may have to give that a try. The sad thing is that this starter really only needs the top sleeve bearing (bronze bushing...11/16 shaft, 13/16 OD, 1/2" tall), but finding that seems to be virutally impossible.

Just a note ... I posted that this motor was an RD-19C. I cleaned it up tonight and was able to read the tag finally. It's actually an RDSL-20. That shouldn't matter with the starter though.
Tom
