Hello everybody, I am in need of some advice. I am trying to sell an old 1958 Elgin Skipper 35hp for a friend of mine. What I need to know is, is there any value to it? Its complete, it turns over, the lower unit is good, but it needs a full resto. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

That Elgin was made by West Bend (pre-Chrysler) and shares most parts with similar era West Bend 35s. Not many people collecting them - about the only people I can think of who'd be looking for one would be someone restoring an old Elgin boat and wanting a matching motor. Value is probably no more than $100 in most areas. More likely $50-$75.

The question was asked is there any value to it? The Elgin Skipper is a fairly rare motor, so the answer is yes there is some value. You have to find the right collector though. Being in Idaho might be a problem...or maybe not.

Thanks for the replys, yeah I figured it was pretty rare when I could find no more than a manual for it on eBay. I listed it there for $600 or best offer. Yes I know it sounds crazy, but hey its worth a shot right? Its just so complete, and not frozen up. There is a following for Elgin motors, but its small and not in Idaho :( oh well. I guess I'll sit on it till the right person comes along. Thanks again folks :)

Yea, anything is worth a shot. If I was in your neck of the woods, I would probably get it. :D Parts are getting hard to find, but it's a cool old motor. I venture to guess, it's a late '50's vintage. I had a small motor, that color and vintage once. It almost looked like brand new. It was stuck, so I got it un-stuck and it ran great.

From the research I did, it seems to be a 1958 model. I guess Elgin was bad about numbering them for identification or something of that nature? If I had more knowledge of it, and a parts motor, I would try a resto on it.

Yep, that's about what I figured. Well, if you work with what you have, and refurbish it as it is, then you'll be that much closer to having it done. I'm willing to bet, that over time, as you're workin on it, some of your needs will pop up. Other than a prop, it doesn't look like it'll need much, other than your TLC. If you're not a member of the AOMCI, then I would highly recemend joining. There should be someone there, who would be very knowledgeable of your classic and point you in the right direction to get the parts you need. A lot of the members will have a couple hundred motors in their posession. This would be a great project, just to pick the internet apart to learn about it. I did that with that old Zephyr in my avitar some 20 years ago and today, I've got a bit of knowledge about so many different motors. I can almost say, I'm addicted to these darned things. :D
