Re: 1958 Evinrude 18hp electric start

Went to Napa yesterday and got all the wiring to run from the start/stop panel to the solenoid and from solenoid to the connector that plugs into the engine. Bought two new sealed push buttons also since the stop button was broken. Couple of questions...also bought a new solenoid while I was there, is that ok to use or does it have to be a "marine" one? Also looks like a may have to try and remove the outer shell on the connector that plugs into the engine. For one it looks like mud daubers have gotten into it so it will need a good cleaning and the two smaller gauge wires going into it are broken. One is broken very close to the fitting so i don't think i would be able to get a plastic connector on it. That outer shell is pretty darn hard it looks like but i guess i could manage to get it off then im guessing i would have to solder wires to it. Then maybe find some large shrink wrap to re-cover it. Any ideas on these issues?

If i could just buy this connector with the wiring attached would probably just do that instead if anyone knows where i could get one.

DON'T use an automotive solenoid. It is not grounded the same as a marine solenoid.

Thanks lindy46, i won't use it. Will just supply all new wire to and from it. May still be ok just decided to get a new one since i was running everything brand new.

Re: 1958 Evinrude 18hp electric start

Would anyone have a wiring harness that plugs into the front of this motor. Two of the wires are coming from the remote starter solenoid and the other is coming from the stop/choke switch. My wires are a mess inside the fitting that plugs into the engine. Found a harness but they want $150 for it. It's for a 1957 18hp electric start not 1958.
