I came across this motor today for sale for 100$ with the pressure tank included. It caught my attention because of the hp and I really like working on these old motors. I'm currently working on a 1955 Johnson 5.5, my first outboard to ever work on and so far everything on it as far as parts is pretty easy to find and I have enjoyed working on it and learned allot about how outboards work and how to work on them

I was wandering how reliable the bigger motors such as the evinrude 35hp are and how available regular maintenance parts are for it such as carb kits, coils, points, condensers, head gaskets, impellers, lower unit seals, and such.

Also one other question I have Is how possible would it be to convert this motor to a tiller handle motor? That would be ideal for my boat. It doesnt come with the trim controls or shifter? Is there universal controls available that will work for it to make the trim and shifter remotely work also?

any advice from yall would be considered before buying this or passing on it. Thankyall very much

...but hard to find, though, depending on where you are I guess. The remote is pretty easy, using a two-lever Simplex control box. Steering hookup depends on what you have in the boat.

1958 Evinrude 35hp motors came in 3 models. Rope start Big Twin, Big Twin Electric start, and Lark Electric start (Super Quiet). All are very good and reliable motors (if in good condition, of course)

I had a '58 Johnson Super Quiet (same motor as the Lark) that I bought new and ran uncountable hours, mostly water skiing. Salt water eventually got to it and killed it.

Normal maintenance parts are available right here at iboats

Power trim had not been invented yet.

Just be sure to use the Model # when getting Parts. There were Two very different versions of the 35 HP in 1958. One was repeat of the 57(Big Twin), the other was the more advanced design(Lark) with a Thermostat, Sealed Fiberglass Cowl(Johnson called it 'Super Quiet"),

Edit: Looks like F_R was posting while I was typing

Great old motors and very reliable. My '57 Lark never stranded me, and I can recall many times towing newer boats/motors which became stranded out on the lake. If you can work on a 5.5hp, you can work on the 35hp.

It is a 35 lark model number 35514-13647
Do you think this would be to much motor for my
1979 12 ft fiberglass gamefisher?

It seems excessive to me. Those are not wimpy motors. Here was my Johnson version on a 15' plywood boat, towing two slalom skiers back in "The Day".
