keep at it, thats a great little motor.as hightrim stated the button on the tank has zero to do with pressusizing the tank thats the job of the motor itself.make sure when running it is spitting out water from the hole below the motor on the leg that can also cause issues galore if your over heating.once you have it apart post pics of the coils please.if and i say if their original coils they are toast ,no if ands or buts.havnt worked on too many lately but over the last few years 15 out of 15 motors with original coils had to be replaced.(all from the 50,s).even had a motor that i did that actually ran but when i took the coils off i could litterally crush them with my hand ,it was amazing to say the least.as far as im concerned the omc motors from that era are some of the best ever built period.expecially the 51/2 and 18 hp motors.

Re: 1958 Evinrude FastWin 18 15024 HELP NEEDED

I was away for a week, and my friend (Clyde) lost his son in Budd Lake NJ ice fishing, with his frind, both kids were only 15 years old, They had ME on TV a few days on News12 dot com. It's very sad and I have to go to the wake tomorrow. The engine is still in a garage, and my pop up blocker said HighTrim tried to contact me in a private message, I don't know how to use this forum, but my email address is the same as my username with aol dot com. It say's I'm a "Cadet" and that's cool. I'm sorry I was away for a week, too.
Yes, it was spitting water out of the hole when I had it running as a test for less than a minute everytime I tried to pull that darn rope. The coils look like NEW and are GREEN plastic epoxy or something. No cracks in them.

HighTrim, if you see my post here, contact me on my email please, I was unable to open your private message.

I'm not good with computors either, sorry for the inconvenience.

I also have a 87 Johnson 90HP with 110 to 115 across all V4 cylinders here. I have it for sale on CL on North Jersey.
If I find someone local to work with, I'm 1000% willing to learn more. I won't be able to take flywheel off 1958 until maybe tuesday to make photos. We still have ice here and it's cold outside and my friend and his son take priority with this tragedy at Budd Lake. This is so sad as I lost my child also when he was only 17, and it bring back memories and lots of pain.

Admins, thank you for letting me look for help here, seems like I found an interesting hobby to help my girlfriend who bought this boat stuff and I am trying to impress her a little as I fixed car engines for years when I was in my 20's.

Too bad I'm already 50 tho. Wish I was young again!!! Be well everyone, and if you go on the ICE, be CAREFUL!!!

Some retired OMC guy from Massachusetts or somewhere around there bought this motor a few months ago, I am certain he has it all fixed up by now, he said he has a basement full of old engines but loved mine the most. I hope he's having a good time with it!!
Sorry I was away so long, I'm back now with more boat engine troubles, I might be making new threads! :)

p.s.....if anyone is interested in tracking down some old vintage parts, I was at Budd Lake Marine (NJ) today to buy some fuel ump diaphram for a 1986 Force 50, I noticed about 75 old motors he is scrapping for parts, so if you need anything, he might be able to help instead of dealing with ebay, etc....as so many parts are NLA/Obsolete....just posting this to be helpful if you need some old stuff you can't find.....cheers, and lets all keep the boat afloat! <grin>
