I have been tinkering with an old boat with a 1958 Evinrude BigTwin 30hp. I took it to a shop to have it looked at, unfortunately the mechanic or so called mechanic worked on it. When I got the boat back, the silencer was missing from the boat. Could someone tell me if this could cause the motor not to run? Thanks in advance.

No, they will run without the silencer, but I would make sure and get it from the mechanic that removed it.

Hi Tony, could you specify your model? I don't think there were any 30 hp in '58, but they did have a 35 hp, I believe. The silencer shouldn't effect it's performance aside from making it louder.

If you are not working on it yourself, I suggest finding another mechanic.

You should work on it yourself. It will be expensive any other way and there's lotsa good help on this forum. What is the model #? In '56 they made a 30hp and in '57 and '58 they made the 35hp (with a metal cowling). Then in '59 they made a fibreglass cowling 35hp which was butt ugly so I hope you don't have that one!

Yes it could!! When you say the tech removed the silencer and you did not get it back, are the control knobs and brass adjusters that poke through the silencer there? Not trying to insult anyone here, just saying if those were unscrewed to remove the silencer and not replaced then she won't run. I also think evinrude only made the 35 hp in 58, However johnson may have had a 30.

1956 was the only year of a 30hp in the 50's.

Good point kodibass. If they didn't replace the knobs and/or brass nuts the needles pass through, then the performance will suffer, if they put the knobs back on and just removed the silencer, you should be ok. A pic would be great.
