Working on a 1959 50HP V4 fat fifty. The last owner said it tried to run but the fuel pump was spitting gas out the sides.

According to my Seloc manual this fuel pump is not rebuildable, but rather, a replacement item.

I have attached a scan from the manual that shows a photo of the same pump that came with my motor.

http://www.james.denham.com/Web photos/jfpump1.jpg

My fuel pump came unattached from the motor as the previous owner had removed it.

I don't even know if this is the original fuel pump for this motor?

Laing's website lists a rebuild kit for a 1958 50HP fuel pump.

Is this what I need?

Is this the original fuel pump?

Any thoughts?

I'm almost possitive this is a replacement already. I had a '57 gale buccaneer with the original pump, i had to replace it last weekend and it looked very much like yours. it didn't look anything like the original one.

The original pump for a fat fifty is mounted up front, below the carburetor, has a glass filter bowl, and is rebuildable. They should have the kits here at iboats.

EDIT: the iboats/sierra number for the fat fifty fuel pump kit is 18-7801. Note that is for the original pump. If somebody has put something else on it, well.....

James, I had a '58 and a '59 Fat Fifty. Neither had a pump like in your picture. They both had the glass sediment bowl pump, very close in design to the 40HP Big Twin's ful Pump, of the early sixties.

BTW, I never needed to do anything to the fuel pumps, except clean the sediment bowl.

If any of you knowledgable folks have a minute, take a look at ebay item #220136931313. This is off a 2 year newer 75HP motor but might be the same part. Should I get it and revert to this original style, or use a newer style?

Yup, that's the one that came with the motor. Very trouble-free and easy to repair. The only thing that really goes wrong with them is the diaphragm, which is easy to replace. They have the kits here at iboats.

OK . . . well I lost the auction thanks to glenn-o . . . LOL . . . darn bid snipers!

Attached is a photo of the auction pump on top(1960 75hp), and another pump that I have in posession on the bottom. The bottom pump is off a 1964-65 88hp 'DU' series(inboard/outboard). It looks identical with the exception of another hose barb sticking out the bottom.

A fuel pump should have a fuel in, fuel out, and vacuum, correct? Does the top pump also have two lines in the bottom, I can't tell.

The bottom pump is off a very similar motor, but it did have a mechanical oil-injection system.

With the bottom pump fit my 1958 fat fifty??

Thanks for reading!

Not familiar with the DU, but it looks the same to me. Fuel in, Fuel out and pulse. Strictly speaking, it doesn't work on "vacuum" but pressure/vacuum pulses.

UPDATED: 1958 Fuel pump rebuild or replace

UPDATED: 1958 Fuel pump rebuild or replace

I got an NOS fuel pump off ebay. After looking at the motor, one of the heads and the intake manifold have been replaced by newer parts. They are blue instead of white, and the fuel pump mounting holes are different.

The fuel pump that was one the boat is the newer style throw away type. The manifold has threaded bolt holes for this pump.

The NOS fuel pump will also fit the manifold, as it has bolt holes for both styles, however, the bolt holes for the older style are not threaded.

Should I thread the holes and use the older style NOS pump, or should I sell the NOS pump and buy the newer style.

Any thoughts or ideas are welcome.

compare the price of replacement of the newer style pump to the price to rebuild the old style pump. I think its cheaper to rebuild the older pump, like F_R said very trouble-free

The old style is the better pump. If it is a true NOS, it may be OK as is, or the diaphragm may be hardened with age. Since you have it, check or replace the diaphragm and use it.

So the question remains - I should tap the holes and mount the pump?

Never tapped before but it has to be pretty straight forward.

Any tips?

I'd tap the holes. Its pretty simple. Just insert the proper size tap and "screw it into the hole. Stop every 1/2 turn or so and back the tap off a 1/4 turn to remove the new thread cuttings. Run the tap the entire way through the hole if you can. You shouldn't need to use penetrating oil since its only aluminium. Don't use a power drill either. Use a proper tap wrench.

The tap size should be 1/4-20, as I recall. Somebody correct me if that is wrong. What I'm really wondering though is whether the blanked holes are the right diameter. Also, I don't think it goes clear through.
