1958 Johnson 35 hp Control model RDS20

I need the plastic gear rack that goes in the shift and speed control for the above motor. It is app 4 inches long and 1/2 inch square and has app 12 teeth on it. I have stripped out the teeth on both of them.<br /> Anyone have an idea where I might be able to get these racks ?? or can you use some other control box to replace the one that I now have.<br /> The engine runs great so I would like to fix it up.<br /> Thanks for any help you can give me...

MCM what he wants is inside the remote control box. <br /><br />WranglerCarl, it may be cheaper to find the whole unit cables and all used. Keep an eye open for boats setting not being used. good luck!

Thanks everyone for your quick response. This forum is great. THe part I need is indeed inside the control unit. I have sent an email to tcoutboard.com so we will see if they have any there. I will be looking for the complete unit but they are getting hard to find..THanks all....

Hi Carl can you identify the remote somehow, mod#, p/n, etc. how did you describe what you needed to tcoutboard, just it case I'm able to locate it somewhere.<br /><br />Mike

Mike....It is a square plastic piece app 1/2 square and app 4 inches long and has 12 teeth on it that mesh with the gears on your shift and gas handles. It goes inside the control box and the cables attach through and are locked inside this piece. There is no part # or anything else on it. The book just says that it is a gear rack.........Thanks...Gotta go catch you all tonight.....Carl

Hi Carl, I got that part from orig. post, just misread it l/night. the thing I'm getting at is you may have to replace the whole remote to find that part. If you could ID remote control this goes to it would narrow the search.<br /><br />Hope I can help,<br />Mike

If I am reading him correct, that is what he has! When Mine broke (snapped the end off) a local shop priced it at $65 for just the gear

If I'm not mistaken, any OMC two-handled remote will do the job. They're pretty common out there. I wouldn't fix the darned thing. I'd just get a different one. I know tcoutboard.com will have a bunch of them, but any outboard or boat junkyard will have several. Probably the most common old part on the planet.

I got an e-mail from tcoutboard today saying that they have the part that I need. I just got home and it is too late to call them tonight but will tomorrow morning.<br /> Mike....that remote appears to be the same as mine and if this gear rack is going to cost that much I will be bidding on this remote..."Thank You" <br /> You guys are great...where else can you get this kind of help....I will keep you posted on what happens....<br /> Carl

I have ordered 2 of the rack gears from tcoutboards at $8.00 each so my problem should be taken care of....Thanks All !!
