Hello,

I have a 1958 Johnson 5.5 CD-15 boat motor. The shift handle is broke off. I have one to replace it, but I don't know how it comes out. Can someone please tell me how to get the old broke handle off.

Thanks for your help !!

Remove the powerhead to get at the shift linkage on the other end of that handle.

Can I just put the bolts out of the bottom and pull the power head off ? I have never pulled a power head before ?

Thanks

That's the basics. As I recall, there are 7 of them, but check me out on that. Disconnect the air/fuel hoses first. It's a little easier to put back on if you remove the verticle throttle shaft too, but not really necessary.

You will need a new powerhead gasket and a new 303355 gasket that goes on top of the seal assembly. And a new 303347 oring. You will see what I'm talking about when you get in there. Don't think the seal assy is "good enough" If it leaks, water goes up into the powerhead and it's goodby motor.

The inner lever at the inside end of the shift handle is fragile once you take the screw out of it. Don't stress it, just slide it off.
