OK, with summer about to begin I was thinking that it is time to drop the lower end to my 1958 Johnson Super sea horse 35 hp and replace the seals. My question is, being that I am kinda new on working on outboards, What kinda job am I getting into? and Is there anything I should look out for/advice? Also, I found a couple of seal kits online, but they are different part numbers, one is 18-2686 from Diversified-Marine, and the other is 22-26860. Anyone know the difference? I was also gonna drop in a new Impeller while I was in there also. I am still waiting on the repair manual that I won on ebay. But sometimes books don't give you what real life expirience does. Any help is appritiated before I start this task, and I really don't want to screw this up. Thanks in advance.

the 18 part is a sierra part, the 22 i have no idea who makes it. read the manual, before you ever start. be sure to check the forward, reverse gears and the clutch dog.

Why do you think you need new seals? Is there water in the lower unit? If so, you may want to pressure check to see where it is leaking. May just be the seals in the drain plug and overflow plug. Those are the easiest to replace. The prop shaft seal tends to get fishing line entangled in it and is the next most probable culprit. It's not too difficult to remove/replace with common tools. If it's the upper driveshaft seal, you will need a puller to remove the old one. The most difficult one, without a special tool, is the shift rod seal - I wouldn't replace it unless it is definitely leaking, unless you're willing to either buy or fabricate the proper tool to remove the old one. With the proper tool, it's a snap to replace.

Since the 2686 is the same in both stock numbers, I'm betting that the second one is the same kit, renumbered to suit some reseller. The Sierra one is avalable here on iboats.com. See the link in the previous message.

It's not holding fluid, not sure where its leaking from. I got the manual the other day and began to tear it down. I found that all the gears look to be in really good shape, no corrosion or breaks. When I removed the housing to them, all the bolts in the lower end housing had a cork material that just powdered to nothing. Also where the manual stated that there should be gaskets on the housing (exterior) there weren't any. Impeller and housing looked good. So now my question is what was on those bolts on the lower gear housing. Should I put anything on those? I will replace all that I can out of the seal kit. I did see that one seal and the manual stated I needed a punch tool for it, wasn't going to mess with it because I don't have the tool. Prop seal was a little chewed on. And it looked like the prop was missing a washer that the manual stated should be there behind it. So next step for me, unless there is anymore advice out there, is to get the seal kit and impeller. Wish I could show you guys pictures, got this boat/motor at a steal, just want it to last as long as possible.

shift shaft seals are very common to leak. While you have it apart just replace all of them. There shoud be no gasket material on the bolts. Somebody coated them with something that is not needed. The seal kit will have all the gaskets you need. If the 58 is the same as the 57 then their will be a spaghetti seal where the lu splits, a drive shaft seal, a prop shaft seal and a shift shaft seal along with two plastic washers for the drain and vent plugs.

Ok very good, thanks. I will not put anything else on the bolts to the gear housing when I get it back together. I ordered the parts from...yes, IBOATS.COM and have them otw. Thank you again.
Will let you know how it turns out.

For replacing the seals, here's a thread with pics to help you out.

I would buy the tool for replacing the shift rod seal. There's a guy selling them on http://www.aomci.org/, or you can make your own with a grinder.
Also, the drive shaft seal can be removed easily with a seal puller available at auto part stores.
