Anyone know offhand the initial settings for the low and high speed mixture screws? First time the carb has been off of this motor since it was new! I last used it in the early eighties. It always ran perfect every year previous....pre-ethanol! I think it was due! Also....I forget where the water is supposed to exit. It always had a dribble under the back of the cowl. I don't see anywhere back there where it comes out unless it was a leak from the exhaust cover plate! 57 years on the original water pump! I've had this motor since 1968 when I was a senior in high school. They just don't make stuff this reliable anymore! Thanks.... Steve

initial setting (low speed) is 1 1/2 turns out from seated -- about 3/4 for the h.s. needle (bottom needle). The ports are under the head on the inside of the leg ('57 anyway) -- in that vicinity. You will get a spray going out horizontally (kind of between a mist and a spray). Sounds like a nice motor (threes are great runners). Like a little sewing machine.

edit. ports under the swivel bracket about half way down the leg, on the inside/transom side. Oh, and there is a screw on the lower right side of the powehead (about the size of the oil fill plug on the lower unit). Can remove the plug to flush, or when operating to check whether the pump is working (don't leave it out while operating, of course).

Hey thanks! They were so sticky I couldn't tell where they started before I freed them up! I knew they weren't open far. Yes...I now recall after looking again... The ports ARE just under the swivel. Yep ...sewing machine smooth...it would just putt, putt, putt, along all day trolling for pike on the lake up north where I grew up. Took a long time to get an old wood strip 14 ft. Larson fishing boat to the other end of the lake though...even wide open!

yup remember them well (and have three of them). The "sticky" needles might be a result of jam nut adjustments -- or fuel buildup. The latter is a sign a carb rebuild is due. Hopefully, the carb and tank were cleared before putting the motor up -- gummed up tank fuel valve can be a fuel blockage point.

Apparantly the motor last had good fuel in it. It was skunky and orange but no green ethanol mungus! Cleaned out the tank good... the seals on the carb needles are the sticky problem. Probably gonna need a kit. Disassembled everything today and gave everything a good cleaning. Surprisingly I have nice strong fat blue spark! I expected corroded points . It's been sitting in my cousins boat shed up at the lake since the early 80's when I last used it ....then I had several career moves. He brought it down here to me when attending a family funeral. Glad to finally have the old girl back!

Nice. Spark might not last, as coils might be in process of dying. But if it were mine I would try to fire it up. Just running it can do wonders. Run it in a barrel, water about half way up the leg (just under the ports). Will want an impeller change, but might be able to get it revived first. Would use an 18:1 mix initially, maybe move to 24:1 but no leaner.

Impeller change.....you mean they're only good for 57 yrs? :) It has always run on the recommended 16:1 mix. All the instructions are still perfectly legible on the top of the recoil! Most of the years I've owned this I knew nothing about outboards. Just gas er up and go! Never a problem in all those years.....and it wasn't exact babied when I was a kid! Bought it in 1968 from an old widow lady that lived on the lake. Heck of a motor!

56 years on an impeller, then all bets are off. Run it on 16:1.

the widow lady -- only motored over on Sundays to a church on the lake?:D

She also had a 1957 7 1/2 hp as I recall. Wouldn't sell that as she still got out fishing. This was all back in 1968....SOME things I still remember clearly...others,not so much! Guess we remember stuff in order of importance! Ha!

I always change the impeller BEFORE I start it up from sitting for a while. At that age, its rotted, and could fall apart on start up. Then you are tasked with picking rubber throughout the cooling system for ever, chasing over heats. Do yourself a favour, and change it right away.

Yep... The impeller was my first thought upon getting the motor back! Stuff this old still available at a Johnson Evinrude dealer? I think it went to crap after BRP got involved. I can't do internet purchasing....don't have any credit cards.

Find a NAPA outlet (line of marine parts -- Sierra). Good idea to avoid busting up the impeller.

Napa....I do recall they have a marine catalog! Thanks! I've thrown a ton of money at restoring an old bass boat and motor....well...more than I WANTED to spend...I think any further parts needed are going to be put on hold for awhile! Never imagined it would cost so much to properly rewire a boat! I think the old 3 hp may be put on the back burner for a bit. I just needed a diversion from that boat project for awhile! ...Thanks guys! ...Steve
