Got alot done this morning

Got alot done this morning

Well I finally just hooked up to the lonestar today and worked on it. I have a shop full of atv's to be working on but I really wanted to do something to the finned tin today. Last weekend I bought a gallon of chemical stripper, some gloves, and other essentials and went to work on it this morning. I still have a little left to do on the very bottom but all in all it wasn't too bad. Smear stripper on let it bubble scrape and powerwash off. repeat till done.

Sounds and looks like it will look real nice from the picture rendering you posted earlier. Can't wait to see pictures of it completed!

Re: Got alot done this morning

I found 2 things one bad I think. the bad - I have a pretty good sized rub/rip in the guard on the front v. I can't think of what it is called right now or I just don't know. Then after stripping I also found 16 holes on each side on the front of the bow. I'm guessing they were uses to put on the identification letters and numbers at some point. I've never seen anything except stickers and paint for the numbers but the way they are arranged that must be what they are for. 8 letters with a top and bottom hole all at an angle. Here is a picture of the damage to the front.2012-09-13 10.48.05.jpg Is it called a keel guard or just the keel?

Just Keel, they do sell a keel guard that some guys apply over the keel with adhesive.

jc Nice progress. Someone here had keel damage worse than yours. He ended up finding a welder who did a great job patching it up.

My Lone Star has the same wear, I have showed it to 3 welders and none of them will touch it. It doesn't leak, just looks bad. I'm looking at patching it with some thicker alum L, 5200 and rivets. Winter project.

Great Finned Tin.

A good welder that knows aluminum should be able to stitch that right up no problem!

Sunday was dreary and I didn't feel like doing anything really so I finished getting all of the paint off the bottom of the hull and washed out the dirt and extra stuff from the inside of the Lonestar2012-09-16 16.02.23.jpg2012-09-16 16.02.42.jpg Next is sanding and either polishing or painting the bottom, not for sure which yet.

Re: Got alot done this morning

I'm going to seal and paint the bottom of mine, seems like it will be easier to wash it than polish it later on. Just a thought. I hope to have updated pictures of mine posted soon. Other "projects" have kept me away from my boat project :(

Re: Got alot done this morning

I've pretty much decided to just paint the bottom white. It will be easier and will cover water I wind up doing on the hole in the keel. The bottom of the boat has some pretty good dents and scrapes, I just think it will look better painted at this point. Plus my wife was mad at me the other day and she popped off something about it was going to take me 8 years to finish this boat. I'm going to slap some paint on it, get the bow replaced and get her on the water asap just to prove the wife wrong.

Very nice job. Send me your number for the next time I need a scraper. :)

LOL :D I understand completely about the wife thing. I have a few dents as well, to be expected after all those years of service, I figure you don't see them when it's right side up and in the water so I'm not worried about them. Everything else looks real good and tight with exception of the cut bow cover. I'm hoping to make some real progress over the winter.

Re: Got alot done this morning

Well I got to work on the old lonestar some more today. I fixed the hole in the keel with some water weld. The hole did not go through to the floor so basically I just cosmetically fixed it. I have used the water weld on other holes in my fishing boat and seems to hold up well.

I also got to work on priming the bottom of the boat with some self etching primer. So far 2 cans I tried 2 different brands because walmart only had one can but it was only $4 compared to the rest I have found for $7-$9. The walmart is the rustoleum in my opinion the rustolem is better. I liked the spray at any angle option with this can. The duplicolor is fine and I like the fan spray pattern but it doesn't spray well when the can is tilted. So now to find some more rustoleum self etching primer and some rustoleum bright white then I can flip this boat back over proper.

Re: Got alot done this morning

lookin' good. The waterweld should work fine. Just give it plenty of time to cure and take your time with the prime /paint. If worse comes to worse, you can rivet/screw/weld a piece of aluminum angle over it. Just take it easy when you hit the ramps while you're pulling those James Bond aerial maneuvers :) After you have it painted, it'll be ready to flip at which point she'll officially be a boat! No turning back now.....

Nice work w/ the repair & the ZC paint on the hull so far. I don't know but making sure it's well cured before covering the water weld w/ paint or primer.

Looking forward to seeing it right side up

getting closer to flipping. Now if only my paint didn't peel when I pulled the masking tape all would be well but that is a whole nother problem

Re: Got alot done this morning

I havent done a single thing to the lonestar here lately. I did pick up a nice evinrude lark 40 this weekend though. Short shaft just like I needed. Best part was it was thrown in a trade deal I done awhile back but just now collected so it was kinda like it was free. Good compression, solid looking outboard just need to find or build a wiring harness, steering, shifting, and throttle controls now. I may be able to adapt some I already have when the time comes.2012-12-16 11.35.59.jpg2012-12-16 11.35.44.jpg2012-12-16 11.35.29.jpg

I wish i had restoerd my old loneStar--Replace the floor(twice) interior, and put a new 115 Evinrude on her in 1996. I still regret selling her. People in $200,000 dollar boats would pull up and ask about it.

Good luck on you boat-looks great so far!

Note: the paint tends to come off the bottom running above 40mph!
