Hi everyone,
I have an older evinrude 18 horse that I have been using all summer and its been good until lately. For the past couple of weeks its been taking longer to start and it will cut out at lower RPM's. The other day I was out for about 1.5 hours and when I went to start it again I had an especially hard time. Once it did it only went for about 200 meters and then slowly cut out and I had smoke coming from the back part of the engine. As it was going it was making an almost hollow sound and it seemed like it just was not getting enough of something. I checked the plugs and they seem fine. Anyone have any idea what this might sound like??? Any hepl would be great
thakns
Blake

Borr, welcome to Iboats.

Are you saying that smoke/steam was coming out of the hole that normally has water coming out, or was it that the exhaust was particulairly smokey? Or was the smoke coming from the engine compartment?

When the engine is running at full throttle, it's turning up to it's proper rpms and generally running well? How about at 1/2 throttle?

Take the two spark plugs out and have a look at the firing end. How do the insulators appear? How do they compare?

Sorry to answer your question with more questions, but I'm sure we can figure this one out.

PS - if you could find your model number, it would help. Some of the 50's 18hp engines didn't have thermostats.

thanks for the reply,
Sorry to be so vague with my question its just that my knowledge of boat motors is fairly limited. The smoke was coming from the engine compartment. It generally runs well but lately before this problem occured it would cut out most times when it was idling. I will get the model number when I go home sorry I forget it at the moment.

No problem - ok, if smoke is coming from the compartment, there can only be a couple reasons:
1) Your cooling system isn't working and the engine is getting so hot it smokes.
2) There's an exhaust leak in the engine compartment.

I'm thinking it's 2, since that would also cause the engine to choke on it's exhaust gases, causing rough running at idle. Remove the cowl and see if you can't see where the smoke's coming from. The most likely place is on the left side of the engine (facing the carb). Toward the back is a smooth piece bolted to the block. That's the exhaust cover. Check around it's periphery. If this is indeed what's going on, the engine will run much better with the cowling off.

Hi Borr,
I think I am going to go with Paul's #1 choice - lack of cooling. The "hollow sound" you noted is typical on those motors when they're not pumping water, as the water acts as a sound shield within the motor and the exhaust leg. Without water flowing through the motor it will sound "hollow".
Do you know the last time the waterpump was changed?
I would do a compression test, as you may have overheated it causing internal damage, which is resulting in your finding it hard to start and keep running. Also, as Paul said, take a look at the plugs and note what you see...

- Scott

Re: 1959 0r early 60's evinrude problem

you guys were right.....I need a new impeller(spelling?) and a seal right below the impeller. It was the actual pin in the shaft that turns the impeller that is no good but there is some visible wear on the impeller itself as well so while its a part im gunna replace that as well. Thanks for the help guys, much appreciated
