1959 10 horse evirude problems

Hi everybody.i just bought a 1959 10 horse evinrude.i cleaned the points and put new plugs in it but in order to keep it running i have to keep the choke pulled out the whole time it runs.the two settings on the front keep moving around as well.do i need to clean the card or reuild it.the motor has no power at all on the water and when it shuts off a big gas oil film comes out the back.plus the motor dosen't go into forward all the time.i checked the linkage and the bolts are tight.if any one can help me out that would be great.my kids are bugging to go out again.thanks

I have the same engine, definately needs a carb rebuild, parts are still available, you'll probably have to replace the old float if its cork with newer plastic type. I did the water pump on mine, they're easy to work on.

My controls are sloppy like yours are, I think theres a spring missing to tension the dials against the front control plate. Haven't fixed mine yet but I plan on using some fuel tubing to provide tension or a spring if I can find something at the hardware store. When mine is running I can see the rich/lean dial moving from the vibration, maybe an O ring will help it hold a setting.

thanks guy i will do a rebuild on the carb.the controls will have to wait till i at least get the motor runnig good.

yep, sounds like you need a carbkit/cleaning,,usually if you have to choke it to pull fuel,its dirty carb,but if your adjustments are spinning around and not snug,you could be sucking in unwanted air,,,,as for your adjustments,there should be a packing that comes with your carb kit ,that will tighten around the needle valves[adjustments]and hold them snuggly without movement
