hi i am new at this so bear with me. my father has given me and my brothers a 1959 18 hp fastwin. i think its a great motor for our little 16 ft alum. v bottom. but haveing some engine minor problems i do realize its over 50 yrs old. i took off the fly wheel and looked over somethings didnt really know what was doing sincei have worked on a outboard motor. but i am a maintence mech an electrician and work on my 99 silverado alot and am sucessful in keeping that running. i have found the torque specs for the fly wheel at 40 to 50 lbs in some of theese forums. after i have already torqued to much already hopefully i didnt damage anything yet and have found some carb adjusting topics that would be helpful. problem now is that the throttle seems tight i did take off one coil and look at it but was sure i put it back just like it came off and it looks that little wheel that hits when the trottle increases doesent hit right agian but i know it get more throttle when its put in gear havent tried that yet so if someone could lead me the right way or hopefull email me some of the copy of them shop manuals or some helpful pages to help me get this boat in the water for good fishin season so i dont have to fool with this motor every other weekend and im kind of on a tight budget so any help is appreciated.

If the compression is good (+/-) 10 psi of each olther:

1. You can be assured your coils need to be replaced.

2. Replace points/condenser. Set [points at .020".

3. Use ONLY Champion plugs.

4. Rebuild carburetor and fuel pump. Parts are a plenty.

5. Replace water pump impeller.

6. Renew lower unit lube. Replace drain/fill plug seals too.

All told, about $75.00 invested.

All that hinges on the header-Compresion.

Your call.

it also ran ok last year just sputtered and stuff a little the coils are still the red ones. i kept getting shocked so that why i took off the fly wheel to look just rembering shop class about the electric stuff under the fly wheel. that old motor used to really scoot that little boat up and down the river. remeber when i was a little boy and dad would hammer on it and the front end would lift out of the water and i would just watch the wake open up the river. and no i dont think i am going to ship it. want to hang on to it seem like a good motor from what am reading if i can get it tuned back up for to again.

does that whole ignition plate lift off of there i think i may have read that somewhere? nothing would have moved by just taking one coil off?? because that little throttle wheel still puzzles me but maybe it needs to be in gear if i remeber right. and torqueing down the flywheel to tight make the throttle linkage tight??

New Shade Tree Boat Mech.
Here's a link to a series of articles written by Max Wawrzniak
About reviving old OMC [Johnson/Evenrude] motors.
I learned alot from these articles.
I just got done reviving a 57 Johnson FD11, 18hp. Finally got it on My 16' Jon boat. Man is that a fun motor. Sure pushes that barge
better than the 55 Johnson 5.5hp I ran on it last year!
Study up on the ign. and carb and You'll have that old girl going
as strong as You remember!!
Good Luck.
