Re: 1959 18 hp fastwin

ok! well i went home and put the motor in a trash can and it pumps water. got it going could get it going for 30 to 45 secs. tired adjusting the the slow speed idle and it kept dying on me kept reading all maxs articles i printed off and some other guys. it was getting really hard to start. so with all the times i pulled the rope the damn thing fianally broke. i remeber it broke when i was a kid and my brother broke it when he got old enough to use it when he was a kid so it was kind of short. so now i am kind of frustured. so with doing more reading i found that the high speed needle adj. is the one that controls the starting???? and as far as the oil running down the back of the lower unit (boat side) it still doing that ??? so does anyone have any info or pages for fixing the recoil? and i am probly going to order a carb kit today seeings how i just got paid and probly some of them orings for the fuel line connector. could that be my starting problem?? changed the fuel side one with one from the hrdwre store. ( i know not the right one there special). i did pull out the low speed jet and there was a buch of black specs on it so that why i think carb kit and tha ti put it away last year not running so it probly sat with gas in it. damn me! i think with all the info i printed off i should be able to do the kit myself. i am getting spark on both plugs but i think i am going to get a spark tester at napa today and ask them about the siera marine catalog. maybe that will tell a better story?? maybe new plug wires dont want to pull the ingnion off dont think thats the prob and kind of scared it uncharted territory for me.

I recommend going to a reputable lawn mower repair or marine shop. I would NEVER buy a starter rope repair kit from a Home Depot or Sears. The supplied rope in these kits are junk. In my experience the bulk starter rope from Briggs and Stratten is good stuff. You should be able to get the good stuff for less than $5.
Good luck!

Good call on the OMC kit. I just rebuilt my carb with a Sierra kit and it did not include the packing material or washers and the float needle and seat were defective. For $18.00 I got a couple of gaskets - a waste of money.

Re: 1959 18 hp fastwin

ok! i got the rope rewind fixed! wasnt that hard now i know how to do that ! so i mixed up 3 gals of fresh gas 24:1 and dumped in bout 1/2 can sea foam. got it started and ran it in the trash can for a bit. kept dying would run fine on low idle for 1 to 2 min maybe longer so i shifted it into gear seemed like it would run long as i wanted it to. maybe died prematurely once. so i couldnt wait any longer i had to go out. so i went to the big gravel pit on the edge of town (didnt want to get stranted on the lake) ran it around there opened it up didnt sputter when i "hammered" it open maybe would chug once in awhile shooting across the pit on WOT. ran about 2 of them gals of gas through it. still couldnt get to idle on low idle very long kind of varyied on the run times. but when it died it was a real *&^%$!@* to get started sometimes it would fire back up right away but not always. sometimes it would backfire or loud pop when tring to start it. and the other thing i noticed was the little pump button was kind or spewing out gas after i pumped up the tank sometimes worse than others. so my questions are. Am i on the right tarck with carb kit?? doesnt sound like and ignition problem?? And the tank?? i ordered new orings for the line hook up end. could that be part of the prob? i am prob. going order a kit for it anyhow. might not be able to for awhile now. i have seen them on website and ebay. some have oodels of parts and other just have a couple. what is the best one to get?? some have the like 6 or so of them big washers and stuff??? i have the tank with the metal button.

N.S.T.B.M.
It sounds like You better rebuild that tank asap!
You don't want gas floating around the bottom of Your boat.
Aside from the safety issues, it really screws up Your bait!
And it might be Your problem with the performance.
Here's a link to Dan Gano's web site. I bought Parts for My
18hp Johnson from Him.

http://www.ganotech.com/

He's got OEM parts and He's a good Guy to deal with.
Good Luck

thanks buddy! i know ofthe guy i just found out about him. its just about 50 miles from my town. thats great! to have that so close to my house. i have told so many things about them tanks! like just get a rebuild this one "should" work. to there are three types of diaphrams for the pumps so depending on what it looks like when you pull it out of the tank. anyone know of any truth to this?? (also heard they dont have kits have to get a fuel pump.) baloney!
