Re: 1959 35 hp evinrude longshaft to shortshaft

Would the driveshafts be the same diameter and spline count? Could I take the two driveshafts to a machine shop and say "cut the keyway like on this shaft in this shaft at the same position" ? Is it possible the coolant flow on the cutter used would not change the hardening of the shaft? Thanks for any input. I looked on e-bay and kijiji and could find no short driveshafts, so I am trying to come up with other alternatives! :) Thanks for any opinions!!

I'm not 100% sure, but I think the length may be a tad different. Splines should be the same. If you do machine a key slot, and use plenty of coolant, it probably won't work harden. Otherwise, that material will work harden.

I'd take High Trim up on his generous offer.

I have noticed OMC could be tricky with that. To the untrained eye, they look identical. Then you bolt up the gearcase, and the new one is 1/8" too long, either putting pressure on bearings, and seizing up the motor, or it simply will not bolt up at all.

Another reason I can sometimes have difficulty putting a positive ID on a drive shaft. I have a box full of them. If I were smart, I would have labelled them as I went, but Im not that smart.

Thanks High Trim! I am a fellow Hamiltonian which should make things easier! If you want to give me a call. I would be happy to buy a driveshaft off you if we can find one that fits! Thanks for everybody's help on this problem! Happy and safe boating to all! :) Ask for Steve

Been looking through parts this morning. I have only found the early style like from your '57 so far, but will continue the search! I would delete your number from the main page and send it in a PM.

Update. I managed to find a '59 short shaft for 75 $ and have done coils, points condensers, impeller and cleaned the needles as well as replaced the fuel and sparkplug lines. Seems to run good in a barrel. Sold the '57 for 20$ to a member on here!! All is well!! Thanks for all the help :)
