I have a 1959 35hp johnson outboard. I bought it and reset the points. I noticed that the woodruff key was broken and with a little work was able to get the broken key out. It looked as though someone had tried to glue it back together. I have been looking for a new woodruff key for this motor but am not sure what size. None of the hardware or auto parts stores had any that where the right size. Not sure what to do.
Can anyone point me in the right direction?

If you can find a key of the proper width, you could file it to size. A woodruff key is an alignment device, not a holding device, so hardness is not a factor. The taper of the crank, and flywheel hub at proper torgue is what does the holding.

i had a similar problem and as the last post suggests you can use a key the same width and filed to suit

If you want to get the real McCoy, the part number is 302602 if you have a RD-21 or RDL-21 or RDS-21 or RDSL-21. Or, part number 306253 if you have a RD-21B or RDL-21B or RDS-21B or RDSL-21B. Dealer items.

Jay, After you get a replacement woodruff key installed, be sure to torque the flywheel nut to the proper specification, or it will shear again. Ask the dealer if he knows the torque value, but it will be somewhere around 90 ft-lbs, on that motor.

Not trying to second guess just don't want to miss inform.
My aftermarket manual says 35hp flywheel torque is 60 to 65 ft lbs.
40 hp 100 to 105 ft lbs.I believe the 40 has a larger nut than the 35.
crank and flywheel taper clean and dry.

The first 40's had a smaller crankshaft, and flywheel hub, therefore the lighter torgue. When they went to the heavier crank, not sure of the first year, but they had it in 64, the proper torque is 100-105#.
