I am wondering how much effort is involved to run a 58 jubilee hood on a 59 motor? I really want a 58 motor but was told somewhere that the 59 is the same only with the plastic hood. I have a chance to buy a 59 35hp right now for a fair price but dont dare if its not compatable, would rather wait for the real thing. I dont need a motor, I have a 64 40hp right now just want a vintage mid / late 50's style on my mfg celleron boat. Any info would be most appreaciated.

Check the Parts catalogs but I think you will find that 58 and 59 models are a totally different style

They will interchange ONLY if you are using bucket cowls on both motors. In '58 there were two styles of 35 - quite different from each other. One was the old style Big Twin with the clamshell hood. The other was the new style Lark with the silent package and bucket cowling. In 1959 they only offered the bucket cowling style for both Lark and Big Twin models.

I do not know...but it's probably the '57 golden javelin that I would want. The '57 year was Johnson's anniversary...and very desirable.

Re: 1959 35hp hood change

OK confusion here; Can anyone tell me if this is correct.
The javelins used a split cast alluminum hood just as the sea horse did in 58 correct?
Now it appears to me that the 58 super seahorse has a one piece hood unlike the javelin and the sea horse. Will that hood fit the 59 super sea horse?
If so anyone have one for sale?
Also I have researched a bit and the 35hp super seahorse was made only in 58 and 59 would that be correct?

The 58 super sea horse has a bucket cowling similar to 59 can't tell you if it would fit..

Yes, the '58 Super Seahorse hood will fit a '59 Super Seahorse and both were bucket cowls.

1956 and 1957 were the only years for the Javelin model and both were clamshell cowls. The '57 Javelin cowling will fit the standard (non Super) 1958 Johnson 35, but not the Super Seahorse.

The Super Seahorse name was, I think only used in '58 and '59, but the style motor was built for a number of years, being bumped up a couple cubes and dubbed a 40 for 1960. I think at that point they were labeling them Super Quiet.

Re: 1959 35hp hood change

Great; That is what I wanted to know. They did make javelins in 58 also, but they were like the 56 and 57's with the diecast hood. 58 being the best looking of all the horse's in my opinion. I will buy the 59 super sea horse and hunt down a nice 58 hood for the look I am after. Anyone know where one might find a 58 super sea horse hood?

Re: 1959 35hp hood change

The Javelin was only made in 1956 and 1957, not 1958. 1956 was the 30hp in red/bronze and white with chrome accents. 1957 was the Golden Javelin (white with gold and chrome accents). 1958's top of the line was the gold and white Super Seahorse. The 1958 standard 35 was bronze and white.

As a side note, the Javelin name was revived again in the late 1970s as a deluxe model 85 and later 100 horsepower V4...
