1959 35hp lower unit exhaust housing drain

I have a guestion about the exhaust housing drain on my evinrude outboard. on my motor and on a parts motor i also own, the exhaust housing drain seems to never been completed. There was some gunk in the area in the exhaust that leads down to the drian hole and i cleaned it out, but the more i cleaned i realized that the hole seems to not be completly drilled thruogh or connected. does anyone have an explination

Welcome to Iboats!

Those often do fill up with gunk, and they in fact do connect with the drain port on the side of the lower unit, just above the "bullet" section and below the anti-ventilation plate. I use a 12" long 1/8" drill bit to clean them out.

I have a couple gearcases where the side has blown out due to the clogged passage filling with water and then freezing.

thanks paul moir for your reply. my spare motor does have a crack due to freezing. but i have poked and prodded quite aggressively and still feel that the hole was never completed by the manufacturer. but i will try the 1/8th inch drill bit and let you know how it worked.

paul you are great! I tried the drill bit and I couldn't have asked for better results. it was just gunk. I had myself convinced that it was going to be harder than it was. thanks again. I am going to check the forums often and try to return the favor to anyone that may need the help.
