1959 35hp RDS-21 Factory options

i’m restoring a Super Sea Horse - Electric Start and am curious to know if a Tiller Handle option had been made available at the time ? if so, has anyone got photos of the controls arrangements ? choke and start/ignition setup ?
Alternately - if tiller setups were not available how have the been modified to do so ? photo or drawings would be immensely helpful

There was a tiller option.-------I think you remove the piece with that throttle lever.-----Then install the tiller bits there.----E-bay might have the odd tiller handle listed.-----Your location ?

I’m in Toronto,Canada -the tiller handle itself seems like the easy part -I’m curious how and where the start/igntion switch and chokes were mounted

Those motors came with a junction box that mounted inside the boat.-----Do you have all the electric start wiring harness?

This is what i've got on hand - which is incorrect for this model - the choke is electric ' i've never seen 'the silver box' where did that typically mount ? i'm just curious of what an original factory tiller version looked like . Aside from the tiller - the gear driven option on so many other models seems pretty straightforward.

First picture.-----The piece with the vertical lever is removed and the tiller goes on there.-----Or yes I believe that control box ( 1973 or newer ) will work on that 59 model if you understand simple wiring.

If you are interested in "correctness", This was my 1958 some 60 years ago. Key switch and choke were mounted in a dash plate that also housed an ammeter, if generator equipped. "Round Knobs" control was used.

yes - the tiller swap is the easy part - I think that's all fine and straight forward.
Because I'm not using the remote controls - I'm looking for methods of mounting the choke and ignition switch - the silver box may be the way forward - the wiring in this case is child's play - i was hoping to find an 'on motor' solution , but a toggle switch for choke and a push button for start should solve it mounted into the lower cowl - I'm really surprised that Johnson didn't offer that engine up with a tiller option at the time

I am quite sure that more then one left the showroom with the simple dealer installed tiller.-----Step # 1 is to find a tiller handle.----Even the 50 HP model was fitted with an optional tiller.

I've used an exterior electrical box (Lowes) when converting an 18 to electric starting. If your solenoid is under the hood, adding a start button at the motor should not be a problem.

good idea on the external box - i'll need something for a voltage reg , i really hope to be able to get a start/stop and choke integrated on the the lower cowl housing. So far no luck finding a tiller arm to fit that year/model - P/N's seem to be 1959 35hp and 1960 40hp that used that assembly . Does anyone know how interchangeable the geared-internal stems are?
I may have a lead on the handle itself - without any internals .

Oh come on now. The complete tiller handle assembly was used on a multitude of motors at least up till 1972. It is the little lever on the motor now that also has to be replaced with a model-specific gear and shaft assembly.

well- thats what i've been told as well and led to believe - and being the believing sort - have tried any number of assemblies off of motors till 1972 from smaller & other machines and contrary to popular opinion they are not entirely alike .
PN# 0305409 was superseded by # 0318216 - the smaller motors had a different # altogether .
I just purchased the third one now on Ebay - which i believe will be correct
fingers crossed.

????----Why so puzzled.----You need a tiller handle off a 28 / 33 / 40 HP used from about 1960 to the 1970's.----Walk over I might be able to find one !!-----All easy.------And no the ones of the 22 cubic inch 18 / 20 / 25 HP won't fit.----All easy.
