I just recently got this motor, and yesterday i took it to the lake to test it. it ran good in the barrel but when i would get it on plane it started to surge for some reason like i was giving it wide open throttle then no throttle. the whole time it was doing this i had the throttle wide open. it seemed to me like it wasn't getting enough fuel. when i got home the first thing i did was pull the fuel pump apart, it was leaking anyways so i thought it was the culprit. i was just gonna rebuild it but i found a new one for 46 dollars which is a steal compared to other places so i bought the new one. also, i took the carb apart to clean it but it seemed to be very clean. also, could it have had something to do with the cut-out switch? it didn't seem like it was dropping down and running off of one cylinder. sorry this was so long. please help!

So it's still doing the same thing after the new fuel pump and carb cleaning? How did the float look? Was it approximately parallel with the carb body? Have you been under the flywheel? How do the coils look? Sounds like you may have a coil which is heating up and malfunctioning.

No I haven't replaced the fuel pump yet. I ordered one. It should be here Thursday. I haven't pulled the flywheel yet. If the fuel pump doesn't fix it then I'll dive into the electrical. Do you know if the cut-out switch can be deleted? I don't have the correct electrical box to wire it correctly so I was just gonna disconnect it. Would that be a bad idea?

So I went ahead and pulled the flywheel and discovered a bad coil. I ordered a new coil and carb float (the old one was cork). When I removed the coil I noticed the plug wire didn't have a metal end to connect to the coil. Is this normal? Also I want to gap the points. Where do I measure the gap. Everything else looks pretty good and fairly new under th flywheel.

Point gap is 020 when the rubbing block rides on the highest point of the breaker cam. This is likely the flywheel key.

Gap should be adjust so that an 020 gauge will just pass through, but an 022 gauge will not, and an 018 will pass through with ease.

Before you adjust, dress the points with a points file, or wrap a piece of 00 sandpaper wrapped around a hacksaw blade. After adjusting, clean with acetone, then run a business card, card stock, or even paper money through them.

I dont know what you mean by a metal end? The plug wire gets twisted into the hole in the coil
