my 1959 gear case finally wore out and needed to be replaced so i found a parts motor for 50 bucks and it has an excellent gear case.

the clutch dog was better looking than mine. :D

i'm in the process of replacing all of the seals and some advice and help would help:p

the shift rod seal can be taken out with a 5/16 punch? correct?

the prop shaft seal and be punched out correct? i'm unsure on these and help would be greatly appreciated;)

the driveshaft seal i believe is the most difficult and breaking the plate thing or gear case is likely. i really need help on how to take the seals out:p

thanks!

Hi coolguy. The shift rod seal bushing needs to be punched out, but the driveshaft and propshaft seals will need to be pulled out with a seal puller, like this: (you can get them for about $10 at any autoparts store).

Just hook the "beaks" into the seals and pry them out. They may be stubborn, but go slow and be patient and they'll come out. A vice may help too. They will get damaged in the process, but they're going to be thrown away any way. Thoroughly clean the area before reinstalling the seals and tap the new seals down until they're firmly seated, but not so hard that you damage them. The shift rod seal bearing is the hardest part to get to, but if you follow this link, it can show you a few tricks. Good luck.

thanks!

you know the funny thing is....i commented on that thread lol:p i can't believe i couldn't find it when i searched for stuff

btw, i just got my shift shaft seal out but chipped some gear case too. my punch, 5/16, the right size but the top part was too wide and went in cockeyed therefore hitting the gear case before it hit the brass? bronze? thing lol.

i'm currently in the process of taking the driveshaft seal out butttt i heard that you can't use a seal puller for this one because it can crack the plate?

i have the seal puller seeing as i used it for my 35hp seals. very similiar but this one is a wee bit different.

and cracking where the prop shaft seal goes in is possible too so you can't use a puller also?

i'm currently practicing on my old/bad lower unit so the crack in the lower unit is no biggie.

yeah, you can hurt the driveshaft seal housing when trying to remove the seal with a puller, but if you're careful you should be ok. If you're worried you can use a pair of strong pair of needle nose pliers and remove it by hand, but it can take quite a while. I've also heard that some folks take a flathead screwdriver and bend it slightly, then try to punch it our from behind, but I've never had much luck with that method. Thankfully, taking them out is the hardest part, once they're out the rest is easy. Good luck.

on my practice lower unit took the driveshaft seal out successfully with no scoring on the walls. i can't use it though because the bushing is worn:eek:

i heard that you can't even do it that way because the piece is cast aluminum so it will crack very easy seeing as it will not flex. once it cracks then it will leak and you might not even be able to see the crack.

am i wrong? the 5 7.5 and 10 you have to be careful about this.

ordered my seals and 2 extra gaskets for the bearing housing because i heard that the sierra isn't thick enough so you just use two gaskets:D

i somehow lost my t-stat because i took it out for testing but never put it back:eek: well, i ordered another once too:rolleyes:

i just went ahead and sent my seals to a professional to be taken out. he'll take it out but not using a seal puller.

when he sends it back then i can put my seals in and use that anaerobic:D sealant stuff

this doesn't make sense.

i can't get a punch that will go through the gear case and hit the shift rod seal. the 5/16 won't go through the gear case. the 1/4 goes straight through the seal?????

The punch is suppose to be a 1/4" with a 1/32" lip all around. The 1/4" goes through but the 1/32" catches and pushes it out. What I did for my shift rod was to tap a 5/16" thread into it. Screw in a 5/16" bolt and punch it out with a 1/4" rod against the bolt. You could also pull on the bolt.

Here is a video for the drive shaft seal that will be useful.
