Re: 1959 Evinrude 10 HP
Son is quite happy!
Not so much today.

I guess the first red flag should have been when the mechanic said he worked on newer and bigger motors and suggested 50:1 fuel for this motor. Probably had never seen one.
Son came up yesterday and put the boat in the mine pit to try it out. Ran for 20 seconds and that was it. Brought it to my garage and wouldn't start in the barrel. Took the cover off and I took the plugs out with my fingers. Hmmm.
Next noticed the high speed jet was only 1/4 turn out from lightly seated. Checked Mr. Wisner's site, start with 1 1/2 out. Started on second pull. Slow speed jet moved on its own from vibration, tightened brass nut (bushing?) and that stayed put and ran pretty good.
He put on a used lower unit...
He 'fixed' the old one so the prop turns but something is still wrong. Guy in Ely looked at it and said the lower unit is junk, can't be fixed. So, I guess we'll have to get another lower unit and work on those carburetor settings and get them right and go from there.
Thanks
PS: He did manage to rent a 15 horse for $35 a day so they should be at camp by now. He was thankful I mentioned his 24:1 gas would be too rich for the rental....THANKS, never thought of that! KIDS!!
