Son just bought this, long story, and took it to a 'mechanic' he found on Craig's List. He said there is 65# compression in both cylinders. Is this good or not so much?

Thanks

That is not too bad for a rope start outboard, but there is some small risk that there is head gasket leakage between the cylinders. She would have to be started and warmed up to do a correct compression test.

If she starts and runs it is okay.

My son didn't start it, not sure about the mechanic. Guy he bought it from said it runs but the prop doesn't turn. Mechanic said he could probably find a used lower unit for $100. He paid $450 for the 14' boat, motor and trailer. I don't know.....

Thanks

The good news is I believe the motor was introduced in 51 and was in production up to and including 63.Routine parts new and used are readily available some at BRP dealers as well as many vendors on ebay and here at iboats. If you ,your son or a friend are mechanically inclined theses are simple to work on.Prop not turning could be as simple as the shear pin broken.
Won't hurt to put it in a barrel and see if it runs.Be sure the water is uo to the mount bracket and note if water comes out the relief hole on the leg.If no water turn it off.Let us know what happens.

Turns out the mechanic he found works in a shop and does small jobs on the side so he knows what he is doing. :)

He put on a used lower unit but it still didn't want to start too well so he gave it a tune-up. Son picks it up tonight with a bill of $166. Son is quite happy! :D

Thanks

Not so much today. I guess the first red flag should have been when the mechanic said he worked on newer and bigger motors and suggested 50:1 fuel for this motor. Probably had never seen one.

Son came up yesterday and put the boat in the mine pit to try it out. Ran for 20 seconds and that was it. Brought it to my garage and wouldn't start in the barrel. Took the cover off and I took the plugs out with my fingers. Hmmm.

Next noticed the high speed jet was only 1/4 turn out from lightly seated. Checked Mr. Wisner's site, start with 1 1/2 out. Started on second pull. Slow speed jet moved on its own from vibration, tightened brass nut (bushing?) and that stayed put and ran pretty good.

He put on a used lower unit...
He 'fixed' the old one so the prop turns but something is still wrong. Guy in Ely looked at it and said the lower unit is junk, can't be fixed. So, I guess we'll have to get another lower unit and work on those carburetor settings and get them right and go from there.

Thanks

PS: He did manage to rent a 15 horse for $35 a day so they should be at camp by now. He was thankful I mentioned his 24:1 gas would be too rich for the rental....THANKS, never thought of that! KIDS!! :)

Thats too bad, the carb will be an easy fix though.

I have bought plenty of motors where the owners said a mechanic told them it was scrap, only to find a minor adjustment out of whack on it. Just because you have a title, doesnt mean you are good at your job right, lol.

What exactly is wrong with the gearcase?? Best bet would be to post a wanted ad on aomci.org in the webvertize section.

Replacing parts is the most used, most expensive and least effective troubleshooting method known to man. Parts, including complete lower ends, should be proven defective before wasting time, money and morale replacing them.

Always remember that the wrench is going to make a lot more profit replacing your widget than he would fixing the danged thing in the first place.

I don't know. The mechanic said there was some play to it because it's an old motor. Prop moving in and out maybe, not sure. At the landing this morning someone looked at it and said that ain't good so he hauled it back to Ely.

When we had it running in my garage I noticed it shifted really smooth, I was impressed with that if it matters.

Another thing I noticed was it had Autolite plugs in it. Seems to me Johnsons like Champions. Would you agree with Mr. Wisner's site, use J6J or hotter J8J?

I'll know more when they come out wednesday or thursday.

Thanks again.

You should be using Champion J6C spark plugs. They're available at most auto parts stores.
