i am looking at a 1959 evinrude 50hp that has an extension sandwiched between the lower and upper gear case to make it a long shaft. can it be removed to make it a short shaft without having to find some other parts? specifically, i'm wondering about the vertical shaft. is there some kind of an extension piece that can be removed to make it shorter? also, any problems i should look out for with this particular motor? Thanks again, dave

Im pretty sure you will need to find
a short drive shaft.
You will have to shorten the water tube and shift rod as well. Most believe the old timer is pretty sound but some parts are pretty hard to find now.
Also they are horrendous gas hogs.Almost to
the point of rating them by gallons per mile
instead of mpg.As a teen riding in a new
well broken in 50 I remember you could easily watch the gauge go down as we rode along.

Had the same experience as Spike. Used to work on them when they were new.

That engine probably had the worst weight-to-power ratio of any engine ever built.
