Kinda new to this stuff so please forgive a possible dumb question. Are there any interchangeable parts between a 1959 Evinrude 50hp and a 1972 Jonhson 65hp, more specifically the lower unit? I've heard that using a newer Johnson or Evinrude lower unit may improve the gas mileage on the 1959 Evinrude I've got. I don't know what years are interchangeable pre 72.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Bob

seriously doubt it, as the 72 is a hydro-electric shift. and 59 is mechanical shift.

Pretty sure the only interchangeable parts between those motors might be the fuel connectors and the lower unit drain screws.

The lower ends you might have been thinking of are from early to mid 1960s mechanical shift V4s with the bullet-shaped gearfoot.

Thanks, That's what I was afraid of. Have a good line on a real cheap 72 Johnson but want to keep the Evinrude on the boat to keep it original.
