Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hi Everybody

I will make this short tonight. I did a little work this morning doing some fiberglass work. It was a little easier but I do not think I will ever like it. It is very sticky and very yucky. While I was working I got a call from my friend he was just calling to say hi. He asked me what I was doing and I told him of course working on my boat. He told me to bring the boat over to his house and we would begin to tear down the engine (I had an ?appointment? for Sunday and I did not want to appear too anxious). I pumped up the tires and away I went. He has a huge circular driveway inside a very large gated property. I had to back it in from the street because of the way his little boat and other cars are parked in the way. Well true to what he said. He did not touch a single tool the entire time I was at his home. He taught me how to drop the lower unit and how to remove the screw on the shift shaft. One of the bolts holding the lower unit to the ?upper half? broke when I put the wrench to it. (He said it was probably broken before, because I put very little pressure on it). It was a real pain to loosen the shift shaft screw; because it would not go into gear. He said if we could get it to go into gear it would drop the shaft and inch or two. When we finally got the lower unit all disconnected it would not fall, we needed to beat (albeit very gently with a rubber mallet on the lower portion (he showed me where to hit because if I hit a fragile portion he told me it would be all over (no pressure right). When I finally got the lower portion off, I almost died. The entire thing was completely filled with dirt/mud/corrosion/ leaves/ bark. :eek:Not a good sign. He told me either the thing was sunk and the catfish lived in it for a few years or the P.O. ran it in a slue with about a foot of water or so. He told me to grab a little pick and an awl and start poking away at the crap. After I got most of the crap out I took his air compressor and blew out most of the residual junk out also it looked a little better. We could not remove the kicker motor harness so I had to cut it off. He had me take apart the water pump and scrape the crap off the housing. The plate on the bottom of the impeller looked ok and fairly clean with no corrosion. The impeller actually looked ok, he said we are going to replace it; but to my untrained eye it did not look too bad all the little fins were there and it did not appear to have dry rot. The little key was also present in the impeller and in the proper place. At the top of the big shaft the little o ring was there and still in good shape (will be replaced) the gear portion was covered in moist oil/grease. My friend told me he feels a little better with the shafts being greased and he guesses that at some point in the recent past the thing was serviced.
We did not break into the transmission portion because it took a very long time to get to this point. So that will be left until Sunday. He said that if the lower unit is ?repairable? and if we can find parts (if it is not) we are probably going to have to tear the entire power head down to clean the mud from all the tubes and such inside the block. Not to mention carbs and everything else. He told me that it is probably in the end going to take us about 20 days at 4 or 5 hours a day = 80 hours at (125.00 an hour shop rate) 10,000 dollars in repair time without parts.:eek: He said that no shop would even touch this thing. And that I was lucky to have a friend like him. I agree. As I was cleaning the lower unit he was scavenging through the garage. He found a detachable light pole (with clear light) for the rear of the boat with about a 6 foot stick. And the plug portion also. Sweeet. He slipped that in to the boat and told me that it is required to have and I could wire it in at my leisure. It did not look very cheap and it was brand new condition. What do you think the light and plug would cost if I had to buy it? I would like to keep a running tally of the favors I am going to owe him??(or amount of fishing trips)!!!
Oh, I asked him if he would go fishing with me (and maybe teach me how to do it properly) once it is running and of course he said yes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Goodnight everybody;
Dave:D
It turned out to be a long one again. Sorry. I did not think to take a camera this time but Sunday I will. I felt a little sad actually, my little Monterey Dreams is spending the weekend at my friends, he told me I could leave it until Sunday just so we don?t drop anything on the road that we might need (any longer and his wife would kill both of us). I feel like a parent whose kid spent the night at a friend?s for the first time?..

You are totally right Cowboy. I also started school this week ARGHHHHHHHH!

GT; thank you for your kind comments and your blessings. (I greatly appreciate both).
I did not know how such a post would be met. (I am not a writer and I don’t think I did the story justice). I almost deleted it (I did feel a little silly), but in the end I wanted to give you all a little window in to my soul ….if you wanted to look in, that is.
I really must tell you all that I am very happy to have stumbled onto iboats. I never understood the whole social media thing, but I got to tell you, I really do feel a deep friendship to all of you here on the forum, and I am very proud to be a member here, and to be privileged to consider myself one of “you”.
Goodnight my friends.

Man what a bummer on the motor being full of carp. Hopefully everything can be repaired. You have some great stories that I enjoy reading :D

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Great story! Boat folks are the best. We all know we'll never get our money back, out friends and loved ones think we're more than a little crazy and borderline obsessed with what is often little more than 12'-14' worth of rough looking plywood or aluminum. The boat will ALWAYS have something that needs doing (that's the point after all), and it will probably be harder and more expensive than we want, but we do it anyway, and we wouldn't have it any other way. What would be the fun in that? The people really are the best thing about boats. Boating, and iboats in particular, is full of positive DIYers (ever met a pessimistic fisherman? nah, they'll always get 'em next time:) ) that can/do help each other, almost without question on the water, or off. We're all tinkerers and explorers at heart. Cars have drivers, boats have crews. Car guys compete, boat guys cooperate. Plus, boats are better chick magnets than any old car ;) I think I'll do a little tinkering today in honor of this thread! Keep us posted Dreams!

Btw, what are you doing in school?

What Dave forgot to tell you:
When he was describing the depth finder to his mentor,
and the mentor asked the name of the depth finder,
after Dave told him the name he replied:

"THAT company went out of business over 20 years ago AND I probably SOLD it to him!!!!!!"

The entire thing was completely filled with dirt/mud/corrosion/ leaves/ bark.

Sounds like a "critter nest" to me. I had to clean out about two pounds of dirt daubbers nests from my 1968 Johnson 100. Hang in there. You have a resident expert helping you face-to-face plus the iboats forum gurus standing by. Just start threads in the E&J forum when you have specific questions. Good luck!

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hi Everybody,

BN, I think it will be alright?.tomorrow will be a key test. I can hardly wait to get over there. (tick, tock, tick?.boy the clock seems to be hardly moving). :D

KFA; you really said it. That is exactly what I wanted to say but I did not have the proper words for it. As for school, I am going back to hopefully become an RN. As of now I am hurriedly cramming as much prerequisite classes I can. (That was a long story also; shortly told, for a period my only customer was our local hospital. I would spend all day doing department and desktop deliveries to every department from ER to Morgue. I really fell in love with the hospital and the helping/healing of people; so ever since that job ended (layoff) I have been back in school. I am over halfway done with my Prereqs and then on to the nursing program. And eventually an ER Nurse job I hope. (Besides I am tired of looking at dirty old truckers, I would rather spend my day looking at pretty clean little nurses). ;) It was also very nice being a rooster in a nice big hen house. ;)

Dad; Shush?.Although he did say he probably sold the depth finder to the PO.

Bill, you bet I will. :DI hope we get to open the (whatever) tomorrow, I think he called them water jackets??? And see if the mud is localized as you implied by "critters" or if it was sucked up into the entire system.

But whatever happens I will be here tomorrow night posting?..
Goodnight all,
Dave:D

Yeah, "water jackets" is what us old geezers called them back in the day. I think the OMC parts catalog for your motor calls them "cylinder head covers". Let us know what you find and do. Just keeping checking items off the list!

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Congrats on the new career choice Dreams!!!! I just applied to medical school myself and I'm 34, so it's never too late (I hope). I'm still waiting for interviews, but hopefully some one will take me (although with about a 2-3% acceptance rate (i.e. 97%-98%rejection rates) at most med schools, and having to compete against half of China and India nowadays it ain't easy :/ Holler if you get stuck in any of your pre-req classes (Bio, A & P (my personal favorite), General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, Biochemistry, Genetics, Cell Structure and Function, Physics, etc...), I aced them all, and would love to help out in any way I can. Keep us posted on the motor!

Lol...now you will get to see those same dirty old truckers, in a whole new light! 14 years of driving a truck and i give the nurses hell whenever I spend time in the hospital! and which hospital are you hoping to go, because the ones around here, I think the dirty old truck drivers are prettier than the nurses!

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

Hiya all,
Bill, I guess he must be a geezer too, because he is teaching me the old terms. LOL:D
KFA, thanks for the offer, I will assuredly bother you at some point. I finished this last semester; Med Term, and I am in Pharmacology this semester. I am 35 and when I am on campus I feel like an old man. The dang kids are only a year or two older than my daughter. Ugh, it is horrible.
JDA, well, some of them are cute, and I turn a blind eye to the ones that aren’t! LOL:D
ZOPP, Thankx a bunch!;)

Well I did not get a whole lot done today. I am sorry to say. We spent a few hours trying to beat (softly with a rubber mallet) the lower portion of the lower unit off. It is the part that looks like a bullet. We followed the book on the removal of this portion and the manual states that if this portion will not slide off it is because of the bolts are probably corroded into the metal, and that the manual says to cut the lower unit with a hack saw (and it even shows a photo where to make the cut). My friend had me get a little propane “torch” and lightly run it over the portion with the bolts to warm it. He said that the heat used to always work well and that the worst it would do is burn some seals….he doesn’t think there are any good seals left anyways. In the end it did not work either. Well we are not going to cut it so I took the whole lower unit and submerged it in a pail full of oil. I am going to let it marinade for a few days then see if it helps any. Well after the 3 hours attempting to free up this portion we were both tired (and discouraged) so we put it away for a later attempt after the oil bath.
At this point I asked Seth if we were ever going to get this engine to burn. He said yes, after we put a few logs under it and started a fire. Not funny and not what I wanted to hear. LOL:D
We decided to look at the power head and the damage there. He had me pull the heads of the cylinders and they looked almost new. (I had no broken bolts this time) The water jackets around the cylinders looked good with no crud. The cylinders/ pistons themselves looked almost new he said with no carbon or rust. He said that the sleeves were in good condition with no scoring or gouges. Even the head gaskets looked good and came apart cleanly. He said that if we could not get new gaskets we might be able to use them again. So at this point he grudging admits we might get it to run again…..sigh
I put the heads back on the engine and we decided to call it a day. After I hooked up the boat to the car (to take it back to the dry dock (my parent’s home); his wife came out and asked if I would move some boxes (of Christmas decorations) to the shed. No wonder all his “real kids” (adults now too) ran off as I arrived, they knew a sucker just arrived….LOL.:D I have helped put these boxes away for years so how could I say no? We spent a few hours stacking boxes in the shed and B.S.-ing of course. In the course of our discussion he I asked him about his old truck. It has been sitting in the same place for a decade or more now. That started a big discussion on how a guy came and wanted to buy it yesterday for 700 bux. My friend told him no and that if he could get him a thousand he would sell it. I told Seth that for a thousand I would buy it myself since I really need a truck for the boat and everything else I do. And I could not get a truck for less than that anyways. He asked if I really wanted it. I said of course. So he GAVE it to me as in EL- FREEBO. It is all signed, sealed and delivered already. (Well not delivered) it has been sitting for over 10 years and needs a little to get it mobile again. I told him I would pay him and he would not accept it. We added water to the batteries and cleaned the terminals and stuck two chargers on the two batteries. Tomorrow after work we are going to see about what is in the fuel tank. (He thinks he drained it but can’t remember).
This was the truck he used to move boats at his boat shop, with all the Name markings, and phone numbers and product lines on it. It has a lot of rust that will need to be addressed and as of this posting I know it will need a new master cylinder and a heater core.
End the end I got title to a 1996 Ford F250 Diesel lariat (with the huge back seat) and extended long bed with only 62k original miles on it.(and he has put it on non op since he parked it) He told me that truck would climb the mountain to the coast (Monterey) with the boat and not even breath heavy.
WAAAAAHOOOOOOOOOOO.
Dave
When I told my mom what he did today, she told me that he really did/does think of me as one of his kids. Pretty wild huh?
I could not get photos today dad had the camera, so next week I will get photos boat(and hopefully new to me truck) is at home again.

Wow, whoever says prayers and blessings don't help...?

Great news on the powerhead!

Awesome score on the truck...it's a diesel, with some maintenance and TLC, it should last you into the next decade...

And have fun with the young nurses, just keep your radar on at all times...don't want the "boss" showing up just as you are getting ready to "practice"......Medicine that is...

Congratulations Brother...on everything!...

Re: 1959 Glasscat Catamaran Project Underway.

All tghese projects will keep you busy fro quite some time, and you seem interested in all of them. Heck all I have to do this winter is rebuild two outboards for my restoration boat, but I need a heating system for my garage before I tear into these engines. Sure hope you can get your engine running to your expectations. Thanks for keeping us posted on your efforts.

Hi everybody,
Thank you all for the comments. I know I have a lot on my plate, my friends all tell me I am trying to cram three people?s lives/ and experiences into in one.:D Oh well, I can?t sit still for very long?..
Got to run?.late for work.
Dave
If the marinating does not work, anybody know another trick for removing the gear case from the ?lower unit?? Basically 2 long bolts that run all the way though. Probably all corroded all the way up (worst case).
