1959 Johnson 35 HP behavior

I have a 1959 Johnson Super Seahorse 35 HP motor, electric start, with controls up front (Johnson Ship Master controls). I recently took over maintenance of this from Father-in-law. I'm working to keep it going, along with the 1959 MFG it came with, and I have some learning to do. I've ordered the manuals, but they're not here yet.

It starts-up very well and has run very well in general over the last few years. However, recently there are a couple things happening that I hope to understand.

First, when I left the tank connected to it when not in use, I got fuel in the boat and on the ground, and it came through the engine. Apparently the tank got hot, the air expanded and forced the fuel up into the engine. A bunch came out of the engine and into the boat and spilled on the ground. So I'm now assuming I should be disconnecting the tank from the motor when not in use, right?

Second, when operating at top speed for about 20 minutes, it starts to lose power. I play with the high-speed mixture a bit and get a little more time out of it, but just a few more minutes. Could this be a dirty fuel filter, if there is one, or time for a carb overhaul (it has probably been several years).

Third, most recently, when trying to get up to top speed, part way up there it does this thing where it feel like it goes into neutral. That is, the RPMs stay where they are, but no power to the prop. I don't know yet if the prop is still turning as my kid was in the boat with me and I didn't want to be leaning over the back of the boat with him driving it.

Thanks!

if the motor was tilted, the carbs are out of level and the carb float is not seated allowing fuel to flow.

loosing power sounds either like your are running hot, and need to address the thermostat or the water pump impeller.

you very easily could have a spun prop.

here is some good stuff, read thru it. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=299680
