Re: 1959 Johnson 35 HP starter wiring ???

While waiting for an answer, I found a guy in an old posting who had used a spade bit http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=277190&p=1845833&highlight=spade+bit#post1845833
so I did that and got the seal out and replaced. My biggest problem now seems to be finding the right sticky stuff. I've tried (online) to locate OMC Gasket Sealing Compound, Sealer 1000, OMC Adhesive M, 3M 847, Marpox Sealer 1000, Loctite 30517, Permatex Aviation Gasket Seal and Loctite Aviation Sealant.

Advance Auto Parts has Permatex Aviation Gasket Seal. Nobody else has anything. That includes West Marine and Basspro. Have not yet tried to locate Merc Perfect Seal and I suspect that might be a bit easier to find. So question number one is, will the Permatex Aviation Gasket Seal do the Job?

Question number two relates to the water pump. When I pulled it up, the plate below it had no gasket either above or below but was liberally smeared with what appeared to be silicon seal. I believe I read somewhere on this forum silicon is not a good thing in this application. If that's correct what, if anything should I use? Or should I just reassemble without.? Thanks again.

I just found 3M 847 at Graingers down the street but I think I'd have to order it and wait. Which is better, 847 or the Permatex?

Get the847

If the water pump kit does not have a gasket, you can line the bottom of the impeller plate with 847, not completely necessary though.

I'm ready to glue everything back together when my eye fell on the oil seal at the top of the water pump (there were no rebuild kits available for this pump so I had ordered only the impeller). The number on the seal, 305306 corresponded to the number on the parts list from the Vintage Johnson/Evinrude Parts Catalog 1959 so I expect it's been there a while. I couldn't find a replacement anywhere till I lit upon a site that said that number had been replaced by 321459, so I went back and searched Iboats again. Iboats said 321459 was a Propeller Drive Shaft Oil Seal for Johnson/Evinrude, OMC Sterndrive/Cobra.

But the measurements given matched the ones I found using my Harbor Freight Dial Caliper so I risked 14 bucks (including shipping) and will do the lower unit now, hoping the gears and clutch dog are as good as they look to my unprofessional eye and then do the pump after replacing the seal.
