I have a problem with my Johnson Outboard. I hit something today with the bottom of my motor the result is that the lower housing of my motor (the area right below the propeller with the bottom fin) is smashed. It's in two pieces and a third small piece is missing. This part could be described as the lower half of the football shaped structure that holds the gears for the prop. snd the skeg.

Engine details:
1959 Johnson Super Sea Horse 35 HP, Super Quiet, Model RDS-21

There is a number inside the housing ie: the part number(?) is 302520.

Is this part still available? If so, where could I get one?

Best regards,

Shaun

KRRNY4/6
First welcome to Iboats
thats bad news, I think you are going to need the whole lower unit because of the way they were machined back then. ouch

Shaun,

Ditto on rwise's post, I just looking on Ebay to see what I could come up with.

No luck so far, not exactly sure if any other years or models are interchangeable though.

Mike

KRRNY 4/6,
I think I got a lower housing . do you need gears too ? My parts motor is a RDS-22 . Not sure of the year but I used the lower unit gears in my rde - 19c 35hp seahorse. so I imagine this will fit yours. Let me know If I can Help.

Shaun,

I'm not trying to make things sound any worse than they already are, but I was just thinking if you hit something hard enough to do that much damage to your skeg, you may have damage inside it as well.

You may want to pull the L/U off now & at least see if you bent the drive shaft.

Just a thought,
Mike

Shaun,

That lower housing does appear to be a seperate part after looking at pics of several from that era.

Found several on these ebay searches, not specific to your model, but as Seahorse44 points out parts seem to be interchangeable. Makes alot of sense, it wasn't cheap to build tooling for each new model back then.

http://search.stores.ebay.com/JOHNSON-lower-unit_Boats-Watercraft-Parts_W0QQcatrefZC6QQfclZ3QQfromZR10QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfstypeZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZ26443QQsaprchiZQQsaprcloZQQs brexpZWD1SQQsbrhrlinkZstrQQsifZ1QQsofpZ4
http://search.stores.ebay.com/evinrude-lower-unit_Boats-Watercraft-Parts_W0QQbsZSearchQQcatrefZC6QQfclZ3QQfromZR10QQfsooZ1QQfsopZ1QQfstypeZ1QQftrtZ1QQftrvZ1QQsacatZ26443QQsargnZQ2d 1QQsaslcZ2QQsbrftogZ1QQsifZ1QQsofocusZbsQQsofpZ4

You could also contact these places, they may be able to locate that part.

http://www.maxrules.com/fixomcelectricindex.html
http://www.featherweightoutboards.com/customer/home.php
http://outboardparts.com/pindex.html
http://www.tcoutboards.com/
http://www.vintageoutboard.com/OtherLinks/Links.html

Hope that helps,
Mike :)

Re: 1959 Johnson Super Sea Horse housing problem

Mike,

Many thanks for the thoughts and advice. I have found a lower skeg plate in Michigan. Since winter has now moved in, no more 75º,I will remove the L/U and check for additional damage. I also purchased a seal kit for the lower unit as well.

Again, thanks!

Shaun

seahorse44

Thanks for your advice and offer! I have found a skeg plate in Michigan and a seal kit.

Here's a question? Do you know if parts for model RDS-21 and model RDS-21B are interchanagable? What is the difference between the two models?

Shaun

Shaun,

Glad you found the part, here's a model guide, it doesn't list a rds-21b but thats not to say it didn't exist, the way they numbered the models would indicate it was made in 1959 and I would guess the parts were interchanchable.

http://www.marineengine.com/manuals/johnson/index.html

Also see

http://web.archive.org/web/20020124182028/http:/www.Evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/modelyr.html

Good Luck,
Mike :)
