hey guys, i just bought an vintage '50s johnson to put on my vintage 8 foot sears flat boat. it runs amazing for its age but when up advance the trigger and let go it'll slowly move back sometimes. there's no spring pulling back that i'm aware of. the manual i have is from 1959 so it doesn't help. any thoughts?

What do you mean by the trigger...the twist throttle? There is a friction fitting and spring inside the twist throttle...it may be missing if there is little or no resistance when you twist the throttle grip.

OR, somebody has messed with the coils and they are rubbing the flywheel magnets. OR the armature plate (the part that the coils are mouinted on) is worn out and flopping around, also causing the coils to rub on the magnets.

By ''50's" Johnson, are you talking about one with the throttle lever on the front that slides left and right?

Same answer, except obviously no twist grip and friction plug. However they DO have a friction wave washer under the armature plate.

That's why we need model numbers.

Re: 1959 johnson trigger movement

the serial number is 3012-41783 model jwl. the throttle is in front, correct. and as far as something rubbing i'd have to disagree, it operates perfect just seems like in some areas of throttle and vibration of the engine is enough to bring the throttle back to slow, or even stop. but only sometimes and if you just lightly put your finger on it, it won't move.
so the armature plate might be worn out? sucks, i was hoping there was some easy adjustment

that is an early 50's evinrude not a Johnson.

the slide control I think has a friction piece that is suppose to be on the bottom to hold it in place. It is probably worn out. Frank or somebody else smarter than me can tell you.

I did not see the model number at first. An Evinrude 3012 is an early 50's 3hp a Johnson JWL-15 is a 1959 3hp, but the same thing applies

It probably is a simple adjustment. See how the coils in the picture are burned where they have been rubbing? The need to be moved back a tad.

I believe there is a boss on the stator plate that the ends of the coil armature need to line up with.Speaking generically the assembly the stator rotates on may just be worn or loose.may just be able to tighten it.
There may be a friction device near the end of the lever.

Re: 1959 johnson trigger movement

there isn't a friction adjustment trust me i looked. but i very much appericate the help. it really is a minor inconvienience and i was hoping it was something small but i would rather not start dissassembling the motor cause its so old that it'll start other problems if i do. i work on aircraft for the navy and i found out fast that if you tear into something untouched it'll start having its own problems.
