1959 Lone Star El Dorado (part 2)

Well is has been just over a year now since i brought the old girl home and BOY have i learned alot since then.!!! This is the biggest boat and project i have ever taken on and thanks to all on here i have been able to keep it going... Here is the story and Mods do feel free to re post or move the old thread .

It started out as i was going to replace the transom and put a motor on the boat. well just like all you read about on hear once i dug into the boat the job just kept getting bigger and i really thought i could do this job in the drive way at my house as i had no other place to store and work on it. It turns out the PO had silicone on all the seams and rivets but the boat still had a few two many leaks for me plus most of the interior floor and sides were bad, still has the original cable steering wheel. I worked on removing the silicone as much as i could but it is hard when you have to dig out and put away all the tools in your drive way every day.

So just recently the boat gods blessed me with a free huge place to store and work on my boat it is the best place anyone could have to work on a boat like this, With that said i was able to make alot of progress the last month or so and here is where i am now.....(see pics please)

So i have just about got the inside ready for Glov-it . The seats are done for now, not great but not bad and i have had the transom in and fitted and all seems to be good there. I will be putting it in after i coat the inside of the boat. I will post more pics and hopefully keep this post going until the girl floats .

PS Any one heard from Luke Lately ?

Well i hope everyone on here had a great holiday, I bought my self a present 3 quarts of glov it and was able to work on the boat every day the last four days, Here is what i did right or wrong.. I wired wheeled the seems and rivets the best i could, scrub the inside with dawn soap and water, cleaned the in side twice with alcohol. Put on a coat of glov it on all the seams and rivets..... see pics

also got the dash board cut and first coat on it ready for the steering wheel soon and i do need some help from you all as i have never rigged a boat for steering be for

So here is my question, maybe i should ask it it the steering section but i want to keep this thread going here if i can, I have 4 pulleys for the steering but in the bottom of the boat when i got it was two more pulleys, the 4 pulleys that are mounted ob the boat are fine but the last pulley in the back seems to far away from the motor seems to far away to me where did the other two go?? any body please i need more info............ see pic of last pulley..........

W out seeing how the cable is routed along the gunwale to the front of the motor, I domt know if the rear pulleys are too far forward or too far from the motor.

Your El Dorado has a splashwell or the motor pod hanging off the back of the transom.

There is usually 2 pulleys mounted on the front of the motor as a function of the typical push me pull me setup using cable and pulley steering.

And that last pix showing a spring is the spring tensioner to keep the cable from getting slack in it.

Some of the previous pix in the original topic might answer some of those questions. Why the new topic?

ok this boat had no splash well , i can tell cause the boat has no holes where the splash well would have been,and no motor pod either, i am thinking it had the min 25 hp motor that was available at that time, it has the two pulleys up front witch is typical , and the motor pulleys was still on the motor i am thinking these were on the back of the boat some where just dont know where, any body out there got a 1959 lone star el dorado ?? LOL

Hey JB i took your advice and went back and looked at the pics in the previous post and found this pic of when i started on the boat and you can see one of the pulleys on the rear of the cable, Do you think it might have been mounted on on of the side braces for the transom ?

No Woodon that is what i am trying to figure out the one you see mounted is still on the boat about 4 feet from transom, i have two more pulleys that go some where toward the rear of the boat but dont know where... and the two for the motor are still on the motor.

Going by the '59 Lone Star 14 ft (aluminum runabout) I had... and where its pulleys were... and the paint on your pulleys being a hint...

I expect your mystery pulleys were under the corner caps with the cable running slightly down from the last installed pulley, to the dismounted ones being right at the transom.

The cables actually went forward from those aft corner pulleys to the engine and the cables ran through pulleys at the engine, then back to the springs which were mounted to the same fitting as the pulleys. The cables were really close to the transom when the motor was cranked hard over for a turn, but there was always some clearance.

There need to be 2 pulleys at the dash too. So you have 8?
2 @ helm
2 @ transom (as shown in pix WOG posted)
2 @ front of OB

AND 2 extra?

FYI I'm probably off all week thru 1/4....

Yes i have Eight total, I think the 2nd pic from Wog looks like what i should have even though it had a 100 hp motor on it i think it was not right according to WOG pic of over 50 HP.....

Just my luck JB I gotta work NY eve and NY day and sat this week but going to have to get you up here soon i would love your help when i go to rig it up hopefully in the next month or so ....

The good thing is... With a cable + pulley system, as long as its functioning correctly its probably fine.

Mine was closer to the < 50 hp (well...it had a 35...) but the springs mounted right at/below the pulleys.

I can understand the desire for the added leverage multiplier of the extra pulley in the > 50 hp setup for larger engines.

Your mount for the pulleys and springs probably disappeared with the original transom.

Make sure you have enough wraps of cable around the steering shaft's pulley to pull the engine to both of its mechanical steering limits... before you do any cutting or tight bends of the cable.

First let me say Thanks to Luke,JB and Wog and everyone for all the help and info you all have given me on this boat..I have Glov it on all the seems and rivets, i now no where my pulleys goes thanks to Luke and i have my transom in place and ready to seal in.. I also got the dash cut and laid out for switch panel and the rest of the wood for my floor. here are a few pics i hope to fish off her this summer......

Thanks JB I was thinking the same , now the question is how much and what kind?? Is the green stuff from lowes good ? it had the white foam in the side walls much like Lukes looked when he got it home... Another question is shoud i try and put some under the floor?? What about water drainage ? and thoughts and ideas ? And how much foam do you think is needed and how much was there when she was built ?

Boat is looking good!! I would be interested in this myself, I will probably go to my local "Foam Factory" and see what they suggest when the time for me to do the foam in the sides. I don't think I will be doing any in the floor, for drainage reasons.
