A few weeks back I picked up a 1960 Seaking (Wards) to restore. It has a 1960 Evinrude 10hp Sportwin. The boat structure seems pretty solid with minor scratches. Its sitting on 1960 steel trailer, complete with coil springs.

Previous owner said that it had not been used for several years. Last lic in 1999. He claimed they fogged it for storage every year. It took quite a bit of fiddling around, but I was able to get the motor started and ran for about 1 min. I didn't dare run it longer, as there was gas squirting out of the carb in several places and I didn't want to a fire! There was over a cup of gas the pan below the engine in < 1 min. I already ordered a carb kit and new float. I assume that the old cork float is totally gone.

I don't have a definite restoration plan in mind. I dont' even know what a 1960 Seaking looked like when new. I've looked around for pictures, but there does not seem to be much. If someone has an old 1960 Wards catalog, that might help me out.

Its been spray painted on the outside a few times. Looks like once green, once white. I'll be stripping it down and starting over. The interior is shot. Someone added plywood to the top of the benches at one point, buy you can push your finger throught them in spots. The stadium seats need to go  The transom wood and dash wood seem solid.

I'm not going to be moving too fast on this. Winter is coming, and warm days will be limited. Perhaps by spring she will be ready for the water again.

Here are some more photos

An excellent boat for restoration. I would put in a nice wooden slat floor and redo the front seat.

agree slat deck, most only had front seats. 40 hp Evinrude/Johnson would complete it. it bushings are still good in steering wheel keep the cable pulley steering.

Nice rig, welcome to the site. Classic look to that one. It is most likely manufactured by a more common company for sale at Wards back in the day. OMC made outboards branded as "Sea King" for them and Starcraft made some aluminum boats that were rebranded as well.

That one does not look like a Starcraft to me though, possibly a different make.

Re: 1960 14' Seaking

Got a chance to work o nthe Seaking last weekend.

2 hrs with the presure washer. All the mold is gone. The dash cleaned up nice. Its mahogany and is in good shape. The transome board looks to be ash or oak and the top 1/8 fell with the high pressure wash, but the rest looks solid. There is a thin 3/16 plywood backerboard on the backside of the transome. Its rotted and will have to go.

What did these boats have for batteries for lights? There is a bow light (no wires) and a stern light pole (no wires). Since the motor is pull start, I can't image a big car battery. I was thinking about mounting a small 12V motorcycle batter under one of the bench seats and a on-board motorcycle charger to fresh it up. Anybody went that route?

Also, there are two holes in the dash that are 1" in diameter. Any idea what they were for? I was thinking of making them larger, and putting a temp guage and a battery guage there to fill up the holes. Open to other idea like a little boat like this nees a big horn too :)

Well I can't see your pictures, for some reason your picture hosting service says my IP address does not have permission to access you pictures, but I have a 1960 14' Sea king fiberglass boat, nice little boat with classic lines, I posted a couple of pictures of it in a thread a while back.

Your motor and lights will require a standard 12 volt Marine Battery.

I'm just sayin...:D

Since the motor is pull start only, and has no stator to recharge a marine battery, I was thinking a small motorcycle battery would weigh much less and if I install LED lights, would last for weeks at a time. Does that make sense?

Actually got started on the getting the Evinrude 10hp running a couple weeks back. Would fire and run for 30 seconds, but gus poured out all over the place. The gasket in the carb bowl was shot. The gasket on the clear inspection bowl was basically gone. It needed a rebuild.

After the carb rebuild, I could get it to run smooth, rev'd up nice, but an in-water test proved she had little power. (See link in Evinrude/Johnson motor forum). Low compression on one cyclinder (about 60psi). Soaking now on the bench with plugs out, a pint of seafoam in the cylinders, hoping to free up stuck rings / clear out some carbon.

So back to the hull for now...

Benches removed. Man were they rotten. Not solid planks either. I'm guessing at some point in the past 50 years, someone replaced them before. Looked like a mix of pine, cedar and oak glued up under the 1/8" plywood cap they had on the seats.

2 coats of Rustoleum Etching Primer (yes for aluminum) and tape off:

Later today, I've got some new mahogany planks for the seats to build up, and little sheet metal work to do on the "tubs" that mount below the seats that hold the floatation foam. Later....

Re: 1960 14' Seaking

Pretty long day, but happy that I got this accomplished. The seats were made from 2 Mahogany 1"x6" boards. They were biscuit jointed to gether with epoxy and screwed with kreg fasterners. There is a biscuit joint alternating with screws about every 4 inches. I just couldn't see paying 4x as much to get a true 1"x12". The bottow of the seat has a resin sealant.
The stain is "red mahogany" by minnwax.

During the week, I need to sand out the dash board, and then it and the tops of the seats will get 3 coats of resin and then 3 coats of West Marine High Gloss Urethane which helps protect the resin from UV.

Re: 1960 14' Seaking

Any body have ideas about the outer hull. I have 2 plans and I can't decide:
1) Strip the paint and "polish" it up with a 3M scotchbright in a random orbital sander, and then just leave it that way. I'm pretty sure these boats had no paint when delivered in 1961.

2) Scuff up the paint that is there, use either a) Interlux VC and turn it white again and put paint the bow deck red with a red strip down the side at the water-line.

If I do #1, I'll just strip the trailer and paint it white. if I do #2, then I'll paid the wheel fenders red to match.

You need to make sure whatever paint you use does not contain copper in it.
