I got my 1960 18 hp fastwin dialed in and was concerned that the choke flap was not fully horizontal at wot. I adjusted the cam bracket and even replaced the cam follower for the minute lift at wot of the choke flap in comparison to the old one. Well here is some knowledge on what I found. The spark plug wires in their routed path provide enough resistance to prevent the choke flap from being horizontal by about 3/8 of an inch. I zip tied the wires to take the tension off and voila--no more problem. How many people actually look at this stuff? Anyway that gives a marked increase in top end power. Next day, I set up the carb low and high speed and found it would occasionally stall so I bumped up the idle screw. Reason I mention this is later the water in the bucket got warm and I watched the motor start to get vapor lock! So, if any newbies, like me are reading this--dont try and get it perfect in a bucket! the water temp increases fast and throws off your calibration--eventually leading to knock caused by vapor lock, whick could get pretty confusing. I thought maybe I was setting up the jet needles wrong or the packing was starting to leak from fussing with the jet screws. BTW, anybody know why it would not drop out of gear when put back in neutral occasionally-- unless it was cycled to reverse or slapped into neutral with a fluid crisp motion?

HI Tom. Glad you got the carb dialed in a little better. If the motor will not stay in gear while under load and/or feels like your hitting a submerged object, then you probably have a worn clutch dog.
