Re: 1960 40 hp johnson rds22

Welcome to Iboats
Counterclockwise. There should be a stop formed by a foot on the casting that holds the spark plug wires that strikes a tab sticking out of the block to stop the spark at full advance.

You're trying to adjust the stop that continues to open the carb once the armature plate has hit the full advance stop? If so, I just adjust it so it begins to take over at this point.

Or are you trying to synchronize the carburetor with the spark advance?

Re: 1960 40 hp johnson rds22

so when the advance is touching the stop the throttle should be wide open

No not at all.

The throttle should just begin to open when the pointer on the manifold lines up with the mark on the cam (refer to the picture).

When you have that set correctly, the throttle should be about 3/4 open when the advance hits it's stop. At that point, the auxiliary linkage running from the vertical throttle shaft to the cam follower roller takes over, opening the carb the last 1/4 or so.

FYI, The most fuel-efficient operation happens when the advance has hit the stop, but before the auxiliary linkage takes over.

If you want, I can take a picture of what I'm calling the auxiliary linkage.

Before the armature plate hits the stop, that link should do nothing at all.

No trouble. As you might have guessed by that hand made brass link arm, I'm kinda big on these engines. :D

It'll run/idle a lot better and last longer if you have it in. New one's around 10 bones.
PN 5005440 from the dealer.
PN 18-3553 from Iboats/NAPA Autoparts, etc.
There should be a little plastic cup in there, followed by a plunger and spring. If it's all gone, go get all the parts from the dealer. Aftermarket only has the 'stat itself.

Might wonder why it's missing - if the impeller hasn't been done recently it's time to replace it.

You might find an o-ring to fit at the local hardware store. Really, it's not that critical. It wouldn't be the end of the world if it leaked a little.

Re: 1960 40 hp johnson rds22

You may go to 50:1. 1964 was the first year for 50:1.

Actually, there doesn't appear to be any design changes that could conceivably affect fuel/oil mixture on that engine after 1961 (I think) when they switched the rod small end bearings to roller. But '64 is the "official" year for 50:1. 87 octane gas and TC-W3 outboard oil, and don't forget to decarb regularly.
