I just got done replacing my impeller and after replacing the lower unit it now won't shift onto forward unless i push up on the shifting rod threw the acsees hole in the side of the leg. It worked fine before I removed the lower unit. Need to know how to adjust or if I somehow damaged it.

Probably just need to fix the shift rod connector. It has a grooved end on the shift rod so the screw has to be taken out completely so that it can capture the groove when replaced.

The rod connector is fine both grooves lined up.

It almost engages it will give slight resistance at the prop but wont lock unless i move the shift rod up manually.

are you turning the prop when shifting, with the engine not running you have to turn the prop for the gear and clutch dog to engage.

I tried to spin the prop while shifting and same problem reverse and nuetral are fine but no forward.

I heard you can adjust the shift rod by turning it, is this true? If so how many turns, or better question would be what direction do I turn to make it shorter?

Turning the shift rod is for much more recent gearcases of a different design. There are adjustments inside the cover at the top of the upper shift rod.

You did not by chance happen to remove the philips head screw at the skeg?

No I didnt remove the phillips head screw. Almost wish I did so I would know what the problem was. I maxed out the adjustment at the top. and still no luck. If I dont get it figured out today a trip to the local marina might be in order.

Re: 1960 75 hp shifting problem

i'm having the same problem with my 1988 Johnson 120hp. when i had the leg off, i turned the shift rod a whole bunch of times not realizing that i was moving the adjustment, and now it wont' go into forward past idle speed. can i adjust this without taking the leg off? if i do need to take the leg off, how do know where the adjustment is supposed to be so that when i put it back together, it work properly?

Tim, There is a lot of linkage on the shift rod mechanism. There is no adjustment at the coupler, but there is an adjustment on the external shift arm(outside the motor hood), as well as the on the shift shaft just inside of the external shift arm(inside the motor hood). Also look at the bell crank doen inside the external casing to see if their is play in it. I always had trouble getting the motor to have all gears. I ended usp just having forward and neutral.
