Trying to revive an old '50s boat that was given to me lately. On the motor side, a 1960 75hp Evinrude
#50522...03791. Am having trouble finding a service manual, so until that happens I will have some simple questions to keep me from blowing this thing up.
1. This motor has a small prop, 10x9 1/4...does that sound like it will work? 15' hull, 84" beam...prolly not gonna weigh 1400# loaded.
2. Max rpm?
3. Can someone point me to a tach that would work for this thing.
4. Is there a way to add a generator? There appears to be a mount for one, but no drive pully.
5. I tried pulling plug wires out of mag cap with no success. Need to change them and don't want to break anything...so any advice there would be good.
6. Mixing the fuel at about 24:1...would I be safe a little leaner? Maybe 32:1?

I am gonna test drive this boat in a week or so to test it's seaworthiness, and decide whether to sink any money into it, so some of these questions may be moot at this time, but will help me make the important decisions on how much to spend. Thanks in advance

You can get a reprint of the service manual at www.kencook.com or you might see if your local library has one. I would say that the fuel mix on that old of a motor is 24:1, dont know much about the other questions, but I hope this helps.

Not an expert but:
Prop seems a little light, maybe they hauled lots of people all the time or heavy duty skiing or
if the motor has power problems they may have tried to solve it with a prop.
My manual indicates the plug wires have screw ends and are threaded into the cap
also indicates 75hp at 4,500 rpm.
Tiny tach makes tachs for all kinds of
applications about $40.They have a site.
I believe a generator is available not sure of mount or drive.
Your motor uses a magnito ignition so doesnt depend on the battery, but if you are running
lots of accessories you may need the generator.
use 50:1 mix with tcw3 rated oil.
Much of this info came out of my old "abos" service manual. It covers many motors 30hp up 58-72 It has very good spec.info and pretty good tech info.
Good luck,
Spike

Nathan...I just didn't want to spend that kind of money on a motor that may not work out...after the test drive , maybe.
Steelspike...if this boat works out I want to make a fishin' machine out of it so there will be some electronics, hence the generator, but an extra battery will do. I ran lthe motor in a barrel for about an hour on 24.6:1 and it didn't smoke bad at all, so I'll play with the ratio, on the safe side of course. I'll try unscrewing the wires...what I thought anyhow, just wanted to know for sure...thanks, any more info is welcome.
