I just bought it and am going to use it as a trolling motor. It hadn't been run for quite awhile. Put it in a barrel of water, fired it up, smoked a little, then putted right along. Water was pumping out, then stopped. I'm wondering if I should look at the impellor first, then tackle the waterpump next if necessary. Was told the impellor can be changed from the bottom, but the waterpump can only be gotten to after removing the powerhead. Can anyone shed some light on the this for me. I'm thinking a manual is in order. Any recommendations for a manual for this motor? Thanks so much for the help.

Marty,

You DESPERATELY need one of these. Best $30.00 you'll EVER spend.

http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...manual&**********=512827981&*******=225573111

In the meantime, the water pump and impeller are, sort of, one in the same. The water pump consists of a housing that encloses the impeller. Most times, you can get away with replacing the impeller only.

Run the engine at a 24:1 fuel to oil mix. Use ONLY TCW-3 rated outboard oil to six gallons of 87 octane gasoline. There is NO need for lead or PREMIUM fuel.

That's a great/smooth engine. Treat it right and it will run another 50 years.

Parts will not be an issue issue. Your local Johnson/Evinrude dealer can fix you up.

By the way, you can bet the carburetor will need to be cleaned/rebuilt. Again, a simple job, with the manual.

We'll be here, with advice.

Just to add a little more light, the lower unit (upon which the waterpump sits) on the 5.5hp is held on by bolts and the shift rod shaft. The bolts are obvious, but to disconnect the shift shaft you have to remove the powerhead, since it's hooked up just beneath it.
Naturally, you're going to need a new powerhead base gasket to put it back on. Fortunately, those are available.
I hate to send you to competitors of Iboats, but until they start carrying the factory manuals I will. These are better (more accurate, fewer errors, and much less confusing) than the Seloc Iboats sells:
TheOutboardWizard
Mastertech
Marine Engine
Ken Cook
Sometimes you see them on ebay for a fraction of the price, but I don't see any now. Search for (Johnson,Evinrude) (5.5,5.5hp)

Don't get me wrong. The Seloc manual is infinitely better than none (and much better than some!). It's just that for $10 more you can get one that's twice as good as that.

PS - that pump kit for $16.99 you see on ebay - Iboats wants $15.62 for it. ;)

DJ/Paul, thanks so much for the good advice. I will definitely take it. The manual was something I thought I needed, being somewhat of a novice at this. You two just confirmed my suspicion. Thanks for the offer of future help and being on the end of this question. I'll order the manual and hopefully be off to a good start.
