Well I bought an old evinrude lark 2 a few years ago and it didn't have any spark so I replaced some stuff and cleaned the carb and got it started so it runs great! So far I have replaced the lower unit oil, cleaned the carburetor, and have put in new coils, points, and condensers. When I did start it I noticed it was spitting out water so I think the water pump is okay? I have no idea what the history is on this motor but it seems to be in pretty good condition. What else should I do to it before I go try it out on the lake because I really don't want to get stranded out in the middle of the lake because that would be a lot of rowing back to shore:)

Not knowing the history of your motor,it would be a good idea to replace the water pump.

Is there anything else I should replace? I am thinking about a carb kit but I am not sure yet.

In my opinion it's never a bad idea to replace the impeller given the fact of not knowing the history. Even though it is pumping, it is always nice to have visually inspected this internal part and its surroundings. If it were me on the carb, I would pull down, visually inspect and at the very least, replace needle valve, seat, and lower gasket while making sure float is properly adjusted. It is really nice for peace of mind to know that these components are up to snuff.

If it runs good, change the impeller and the oil in the lower unit, and go enjoy it!

Just dropped the lower unit and the water impeller looks very good. Still unsure about carb kit, I will have to do some more testing.

Now clean out all the threads with compressed air and chase with a tap, grease up the diveshaft spline with tripleguard and smear on watertube o-rings and thats done, that impeller will survive another season, unless your in a hurry to spend some more money on a motor you haven't proven yet, does it have equal compression? By all means if you have access to new impeller may as well why your in there, for me its like waiting another week would kill me I would have to just use what I had for now. If you are going to have a waterpump problem it would show up pretty fast so just make a quick out and back dash do it a couple times and then go.

Yes the compression on both cylinders is dead even, I think it was around 115psi last time I checked. I am going to wait until I get this motor on the water and if it runs great I will start replacing more parts. I just want to make sure it runs good. But I do have one question, when I was putting it back together I lost the thing that holds the impeller to the drive shaft, which I think is called the impeller key? I will keep looking with my magnet but if I don't find it, will part #0308928 work? I went on the evinrude site and it only goes back to 1968 but I think the parts were still pretty much the same back then? Also where can I buy this part at? If this is not the right one which one should I be looking for? I really hope I can find it because $10 is a lot for a tiny piece!

You should be able to find a generic woodruff key at most hardware stores.
If you can't find the exact one. get one slightly larger an file it till it just fits.
Measure the with of the slot and the length. It will be curved 1/2 moon shaped.
just get it to fit snug. Good luck.:D

Take the impeller with you...

I found it! I got lucky because it fell in the lower unit and not on the ground and somehow I missed it before. I put it all back together and it runs great again! Shifts good now and water impeller is working fine, once I get done doing some other things to the engine I will replace the water impeller but right now it's working great.
