but if i move the shifter around in forward some times it locks up the prop
Okay, now I'm starting to make sense of all this.
Put your motor in reverse gear and undo the shift rod coupler.
Once you get the shift rod coupler detatched from the upper shift rod, put the shift lever in the forward position.
Now, take hold of the upper shift rod, with a pair of long nose pliers, and see if there is any up and down play. There should be
none, whatsoever.
If you have a lot of up and down slop in your upper shift rod, you'll need to pull the powerhead and check the connection to the shifter. Often times, linkages get loose on the top end. Remove all of the slopiness in the shift linkage.
Now, after you get the powerhead back on, re-attach the shift rod at the coupler and see if you can get forward gear to lock in. If it still does not lock in completely, then you'll need to make adjustments at the shifter. On the shifter, you'll see two clamping screws. One is a slothead, which is on the shifter to clamp the shifter on the rodshaft and the other is a 7/16" hex head in a longated slot, on the back side of the shifter. Loosen these both up and scoot the hex head part to the top side of the longated hole. This will adjust the shifter to make the linkage engage further into the forward gear. The threaded hole for the hexhead clamping bolt, will be attached on the shift shaft and the longated hole will be on the shifter, itself.
