I picked up a FD 14 2008588 over the weekend. The PO has attempted what is probably the worst attempt at a repaint I have ever seen. Looks like a combination of spray and brushed on flat house paint:eek: There are even cob webs that have paint on them

I bought the motor for parts but after checking it out a little I am reconsidering. It has electric start and an electric choke on it. I don't have the electric cable or any parts that are outside of the motor. The plug on the lower cowl is missing half of the positive terminal

The compression is over 100lbs on each cylinder. Coils condensers and breakers look great. Haven't checked spark yet, but the points are way too wide looking at them. PO states he rebuilt the lower end and put a new drive shaft in it, but I see gear lube leaking out the seal at the shift rod. Brand new prop.

I read that some of these systems are 6v and some are 12v. I have looked but can find no reference for electric start on an FD14. It has an 11 tooth starter. Can anyone help with some info please?

Here are some pics of the PO's beautiful work.

It's a 12v system. I'd jump the choke and the starter w/battery just to see if they function. You can't really find the electric hookup cables anymore (for reasonable $$). You could cobble together the wiring, add a key or start/stop buttons and a choke button w/o too much trouble. Gear oil leaking is never good, but re-sealing isn't too bad (about $30 for seal kit). You may coax her into being an awesome runner.. too bad about the paint though. I'd rather have an ugly, scratched up original than the hasty paint. good luck!

Thank you gentlemen. I did a quick test and both work. :) But after looking at this motor more I think it's going to be parted out.

It looks like they didnt mask anything! Paint on flywheel, solenoid, wires, etc....

I have a hideous beast of a big twin out in the shed that someone painted in a similar manner. NO dissassembly or masking, he just spray bombed the ENTIRE thing. It is ugly. What a shame.

What some people do to stuff. :( Very ugly paint job, luckily it peels right off. I'll be using the lower unit on a Rude that I have after a rebuild.
