I have this motor i bought and went to look at the gear oil to see what shape it was in and i think i removed the shift pin. I assumed it was the gear oil filler up spot because of some red sealent around it and pulled it out, gear oil came out but when i went to put back in it would not go in. Looked at the screw and its like an inch long with threads only on the top 1/4 inch. If its the shift pin is that a big thing to get back in? Please help me, or point me in direction to how to fix this from a previous thread. thanks so much.

The shift pivot pin is a phillips head. The drain and fill plugs are slotted.

Put the shift pin into its hole and while rotating it with a screwdriver, rock the shift lever back and forth, until the hole in the lower cradle lines up. Now tighten it up.

thanks chris i will try that. It was the one that had the phillips head on it. I looked more after i pulled it off and found slotted one under the motor. sounds simple even for me to do.

you can use a scratch awl to help line the shift cradle with the threaded hole. I found this to be the best way.

A scratch awl. Are you shining a flashlight into the hole and using a scratch awl to turn the metal till you see the opening? Is that what you are doing?

No need for a flashlight. If you do it during the daylight hours, you should be able to see the holes line up just fine. If you lay the motor on it's port side, you should be able to see what you're doing.
