1960 johnson 75 Super SeaHorse

I recently bought this boat and motor. The wiring is there but mostly missing. I checked compression and shows 95 average cyc. I think this motor is worth fixing and have its day in the water. I just need help. A wiring diagram to this motor would be helpful. The harness that plugs into side of motor is there. Everythting else is missing. So I am not to sure what wires need to go where. I am sure fixing this will also fix my not having spark issue as well.

also that motor uses 1 part 87 octane fuel to 24 parts TC-W3 outboard motor oil. 24-1 ratio.

That motor is supposed to have a metal box that attaches to the boat, and contains an automotive-type voltage regulator and a starter solenoid. The ignition is magneto, with two sets of points and a single condenser under the distributor pully. It has a single ign coil inside the dissy body. With all wires disconnected, the motor should have spark since the ign switch only grounds out the points. Check you local library for a service manual.

BTW the fuel mix is 24 parts gasoline to 1 part TCW-3 oil.

Thanks for the info guys. I have ordered me a service manual for this old girl and I am sure this will help. I took apart the distrubutor and and verified all parts in tact and will replace points to see if I gain a spark. There is no doubt this is a long road to recovery. Thanks For your alls help!!

The coils had a tendency to crack, so look for the cracks in the plastic shell. The points work together to fire two cylinders each, so they both must be gapped correctly so the plugs fire on time. One set of points opens, followed by the second set of points, which actually fires the plug, then this process repeats for the other three cylinders, alternating which points fire the plug.

I have a wiring diagram from a generous member of this forum, however it is only for a 58-61 35 and 40 hp. I am unsure of the difference you will have, although Im sure someone will jump in to let you know. Sorry if it is incorrect, but may help some.

Great info guys!! The wiring diagram helps some atleast I know now nothing isnt missing. I found it strange though that my local boat shop can not find the pionts and condensor. They claim they cant look that far back. Does it matter about the pionts as long as they are pionts or is it by model basis??

Soory I am just new at this boat thing and restoring this looks to be a lot of fun.

Just to give you a rough idea, that behemouth will use around 7.5 gallons of fuel an hour at WOT!

Points may still be avail from aftermarket sources. The were common and easy to find. The wiring diagram is correct for that motor, except instead of the killer wire going to two seperate magneto systems, it went to a sing;e connection on the dissy.

You might trythe points from a 35-40HP big twin (1959-1968), and see if they fit.

Not sure if this may help in putting your motor together or keeping it running, but I have a 1960 75hp Super Sea Horse Model V4S-12 that came with a boat and trailer I purchased. Unfortunately I live in the land of fruits and nuts (aka California) and the lawmakers arbitrarily made a law prohibiting the use of two stokes on California waters. So I am proverbially up the creek. If you are interested in parts or preferably the entire unit, I am interested in selling the motor and an extra propeller and a few misc extra parts for a nominal amount like $150. Following is an excerpt of an e-mail from a local dealer I contacted on 1/5/09 regarding the motor:
The motor is not worth anything to us. The motor cant be put on anything because of the new boating laws. You can try to sell the motor on ebay or craigs list but to us we cant do anything with it. IM sorry we could not help you out. Try to sell the motor someone might want it for parts or something. Maybe you'll get a few hundred dollars for it. Thanks for the call.
